What does it mean to become part of a living reef?

Eternal Reefs was recently featured in the South Florida Sun Sentinel’s Ask Lois column, which explored memorial reefs as a sustainable alternative for final arrangements and how cremated remains can become part of a permanent marine habitat.

The story was also shared by the Orlando Sentinel, helping bring the conversation around memorial reefs to even more readers across Florida.

Recent coverage from WWAY TV and Public Radio East also shared the story of Jean and Fred Beasley’s memorial reef at Dare’s Reef off the coast of North Carolina. Created alongside the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, their memorial honors Jean’s lifelong dedication to sea turtle conservation and the ocean while creating new habitat for marine life.

We’re grateful to see these stories helping more people discover the opportunity to create a lasting tribute while giving back to the ocean.

Eternal Reefs had the honor of helping create a lasting living memorial for Jean and Fred Beasley, whose dedication to sea turtle conservation has left an enduring impact on North Carolina’s coast and beyond.

Jean founded the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, making Dare’s Reef an especially meaningful place for their memorial. Located off the coast of Topsail Beach, Dare’s Reef is the first sea turtle memorial artificial reef in the United States, creating habitat for fish, sea turtles and other marine life.

Now, Jean and Fred’s memorial will become part of the very ecosystem they dedicated so much of their lives to protecting.

We are grateful to the Beasley family, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center and everyone who helped make this special memorial possible.

Their legacy will continue, both through the lives they touched and beneath the waves.

Today, on Jimmy Buffett Day, we celebrate a legacy shaped by music, community and a lifelong love of the ocean.

Together with Parrot Heads in Paradise, we’re working to create the Parrot Head Reef, a permanent living memorial planned for the waters off Key West in honor of Jimmy Buffett and the spirit he inspired in generations of Parrot Heads.

Built with environmentally safe Reef Balls, this living memorial will create new marine habitat and give back to the waters he loved.

Every donation brings the Key West Project one step closer to becoming a reality. This Jimmy Buffett Day, help us build a legacy that will live on beneath the waves.
