Every phone call, every collection box, every schedule, and every helping hand contributes to making the holiday brighter for families facing food insecurity.

This is just the beginning of our Thanksgiving Volunteer Series. Over the coming weeks, we'll introduce the different volunteer roles that help bring our mission to life and show how you can get involved.

According to the 2025 ALICE Report for Florida, 47% of households were living below the ALICE Threshold in 2023. This includes families living below the Federal Poverty Level as well as ALICE households, those who are employed but still don't earn enough to cover the basic cost of living in their county.
That means nearly one out of every two households may be making difficult choices between paying for housing, transportation, healthcare, child care, or putting nutritious food on the table.
These statistics remind us that food insecurity doesn't only affect those living in poverty. Many hardworking families continue to struggle despite having jobs.

At Mayors Feed the Hungry, we're committed to helping bridge that gap by providing food assistance to families throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Together, we can help ensure that more families have access to the nourishment they deserve.

Many people assume that financial hardship only affects those living below the Federal Poverty Level. In reality, there's another group of households facing daily challenges: ALICE.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are individuals and families who work, earn an income, and contribute to their communities, yet still don't earn enough to cover the basic cost of living where they live.

The ALICE framework was developed by United For ALICE to provide a more accurate picture of financial hardship. Unlike the Federal Poverty Level, which doesn't fully account for local living costs, ALICE considers what families actually need to afford essentials like housing, food, child care, transportation, health care, technology, and taxes.

At Mayors Feed the Hungry, understanding ALICE helps us better recognize the needs within our own community and reminds us that food insecurity can affect hardworking families who may not qualify for traditional assistance.

Throughout the coming weeks, we'll share more about the ALICE data and what it tells us about hunger and financial challenges in our region.

Nutritious food changes lives and protein plays an essential role in keeping people healthy.

That's why we're launching Catch of Kindness, a community donation drive with a goal of collecting 150 cans of tuna this time.
Tuna is an excellent source of lean protein, helping support muscle health, immune function, and overall well-being. Its long shelf life and high nutritional value make it one of the most impactful foods we can provide to families experiencing food insecurity.

Every can donated brings us closer to ensuring that more children, parents, and seniors have access to healthy, nourishing meals.
Join us in reaching our goal of 150 cans. Together, we can transform simple acts of generosity into stronger, healthier communities.

📩 Contact us today to find out how you can donate your tuna cans and become part of this community effort. Every can counts, and every act of kindness helps nourish a family in need.
Thank you for helping us fight hunger, one can at a time.

A healthy, balanced meal is not defined by restriction, but by balance.

Nutrition is about nourishing the body while also honoring enjoyment, culture, and emotional well-being. Desserts, like cupcakes, can absolutely be part of a healthy relationship with food when enjoyed mindfully and in balance with other nutritious foods.

At Mayors Feed the Hungry, we believe that food should never feel like punishment or limitation, it should be a source of comfort, dignity, and care.

Balanced eating is about inclusion, not exclusion.
