💭 Did you know… Aphasia can impact many aspects of communication including talking, understanding, reading, writing, spelling and even math!

At the Aphasia Community Center, Inc., we provide over twenty hours of FREE group-based programming each month focused on improving and maintaining communication skills and well-being in persons with aphasia and their support systems.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, LIKE YOU, our programs have now expanded to include classes in conversation, reading, writing, number skills, art, sports, games, computer apps, music and YOGA.

🧘🏼‍♀️ Led by Speech Language Pathologist and RYT-200 Certified Yoga Instructor, Bekah, Chair Yoga & Meditation for Aphasia consists of breathing techniques, guided meditations, seated yoga positions, stretches and flows for members of all abilities and experience.

A 2022 research study published by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association, amongst several other studies, found that yoga and mediation can particularly help individuals with aphasia in cognitive function, verbal fluency, resilience, coping, stress, sleep and pain.

Each class brings a sense of accomplishment, harmony, relaxation and FUN!

🎨 Our group facilitator, Montessa teaches art classes for the Aphasia Community Center (ACC), where members build communication, social, and creative skills through artistic expression. In these classes, participants explore a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, and hand-building with clay, discovering new ways to express themselves beyond words.

Recently, ACC members proudly showcased their artwork in an exhibition this past March. They will continue sharing their creativity with the wider community, so stay tuned for more exhibits to come!

Montessa’s husband, Leonard, who has aphasia, is also an active member of the Aphasia Community Center, making this work especially meaningful to their family.
