OCCHC/SteppingUP

OCCHC/SteppingUP Our non-profit organization's mission is to transition extremely low income families to greater self-sufficiency by assisting with housing & education.

The Orange County Community Housing Corporation (OCCHC) was founded in 1977 by persons involved in a countrywide housing task force committed to solving the region's shortage of housing for many of our lower wage earners. These leaders met with public officials to ensure that federal Community Development Block Grant funds were administered for maximum benefit to very low-income families. As a result of these meetings, the leadership agreed to create an independent , non-profit corporation to administer the community-based program. Today, this organization is OCCHC. Leadership in the early years included Richard Friedman, retired Deputy Director and Chief Counsel of the California Department of Housing and Community Development, Manny Mendez, architect, Elsie Kroeshe, League of Women Voters, Mary Miller, League of Women Voters, Bob Johnson, author and microfilter engineer, Gloria Lopez, Colonia Independencia representative, Vicente Mas, Orange County planner and Ralph Kennedy, an urban planner with the Fair Housing Council. Since that time, OCCHC has developed over 200 units of housing affordable to very low-income families in the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, Buena Park, Cypress, Placentia, Newport Beach, and Dana Point. Most of these apartments are owned and managed by OCCHC. The corporation's assets exceed $15 million.

This month Orange County Community Housing Corporation celebrated Westward Home: A Gala to End the Cycle of Poverty. Hosted at The Ranch in Anaheim, guests joined OCCHC's annual western-themed event that celebrated 20 years of SteppingUP and over 600 graduates since 2006.

Twenty years of students who believed college was possible because someone believed it first. Twenty years of first-generation graduates who are now teachers, nurses, engineers, and parents raising their own kids to believe the same thing. Twenty years of breaking the cycle of poverty.

The western-themed gala, presented by Title Sponsor, U.S. Bank, provided a vibrant and engaging evening filled with LIVE music, line dancing, hat decorating, auction and so much more.

Today, we thank our generous sponsors and community members who helped us raise over $200,000 at Westward Home. For two decades you have stood by our side. Thank you for empowering our students and encouraging brighter futures.

Orange County is one of the wealthiest regions in the country, yet thousands of hard-working families remain housing insecure and one emergency away from falling behind.

OCCHC envisions a community where everyone belongs, where zip code doesn't determine destiny, where housing is attainable, and where a student's education can't be ended by a single unexpected bill.

Tonight, OCCHC will celebrate Westward Home - a gala to end the cycle of poverty. Thank you for our 2026 Westward Home Sponsors & Underwriters. Your generosity powers this vision forward, connecting those with the means to those with the will to rise.

A special shout out to our sponsors and community partners who helped make our annual event a great success. Just as the World Cup is uniting nations across the globe, your contributions are uniting our community by opening doors to homeownership and creating opportunities for all. 🌍❤️
