ā€¼ļø GOOD NEWS ā€¼ļø

Our client was only 18 years old when he was arrested along with some coworkers during an ICE raid in Florida. He was transferred across the country from Florida to Texas, then to Arizona, and ultimately to Adelanto, California.

PLC’s Immigration Unit fought to get him a bond hearing, but the Adelanto Immigration Court determined that it did not have jurisdiction to hear his bond request.

Our team didn’t stop there.

We filed a petition for habeas corpus challenging his continued detention. The court ultimately ordered his release because he had been unable to obtain a bond hearing through the immigration court in Adelanto.

Today, he has his freedom back. He has moved back home with his mother and brother while preparing to move forward with his immigration case.

This case is a reminder of why we keep fighting, why every case matters, and why access to due process can make such a profound difference in someone’s life. šŸ’™

PLC provides legal services to households who are at risk of becoming homeless, and one of the ways we get connected to the vulnerable people we support is through our partnerships with other nonprofits in OC, like South County Outreach šŸŠ
Ā
Staff from PLC’s Housing Unit recently had the chance to take a tour of South County Outreach’s food pantry and distribution center. We learned more about how they provide food and housing services to struggling people in our community, and talked about how we have unique opportunities to work together to support people who are marginalized and seeking help and hope.Ā šŸ’™

JustOC brings together five Orange County legal aid organizations with a shared goal: making it easier for people to connect with the legal help they need. āš–ļø

What began as conversations about how we could work better together has grown into a shared vision for a coordinated entry system for legal services across Orange County.

PLC is honored that this work has been recognized with support from the Samueli Foundation’s inaugural OC+ Fund, that was created to invest in collaborative solutions to complex challenges.

We’re grateful to Samueli Foundation for believing in the power of collaboration and giving us the opportunity to build something new, together. šŸ’™

Monica Glicken, our CEO/Executive Director and General Counsel, expressed that ā€œPublic Law Center is incredibly proud to be a part of the groundbreaking JustOC project. We are stronger together!ā€

On August 10, the California Supreme Court issued its ruling in Family Violence Appellate Project v Superior Courts of California. The Court ruled that California courts have a mandatory duty to provide meaningful access to an official verbatim record in civil and family proceedings, using electronic recording if a court reporter is unavailable.

Public Law Center is proud to have supported this ruling. We acknowledge the incredible efforts of community organizations.
