Congratulations to Christopher, winner of the 2026 Day of Service Patch Contest!

Christopher was recently recognized by Scouting America Orange County Council for his creativity and the design selected to represent this year’s Day of Service.

It’s a great example of Scouts doing more than participating—they’re helping shape the traditions and experiences that bring our Scouting community together.

Stay tuned later this week for our interview with Christopher, where we’ll hear more about his design, what inspired it, and what service means to him.

SCOUTING LEGENDS | BETTY FORD

Betty Ford was not an Eagle Scout. Her husband, Gerald Ford, was. He was the first Eagle Scout to become president. But Betty Ford showed a different kind of courage.

In September 1974, shortly after Gerald Ford became president, Betty went in for a routine checkup. Doctors found a lump. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy.

At the time, breast cancer was rarely discussed in public. Betty Ford changed that.

She spoke honestly about her diagnosis and surgery, encouraging women to get regular checkups and pay attention to their health. Her openness helped many women feel less alone—and prompted others to seek medical care.

Thousands of letters and cards poured in after her surgery.

Gerald Ford carried the values of Scouting into public service. Betty Ford showed those same values in her own way: courage, honesty and a willingness to help others by sharing her story.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, we remember Betty Ford and the difference one person can make by speaking up.

Scouting Legends: President George W. Bush

Before he became the 43rd president of the United States, George W. Bush was a Cub Scout. Years later, he returned to Scouting as the U.S. President, addressing Scouts at the 2005 National Scout Jamboree.

His story is a reminder that a young person’s first experiences in Scouting can be part of a much longer journey. Every Scout’s path is different, but each gets a chance to practice service, take on challenges, and discover where they can lead.

More than 500 pounds of trash removed from Upper Newport Bay 🌿

On September 19, Scouts and families from Pack 239 and Troop 239 spent Coastal Cleanup Day caring for the wetlands near Jamboree Bridge. Together with volunteers, they collected more than 500 pounds of trash.
