Garment Construction: Seams, Edge Finishing, Sleeves, Facings & Waistbands

In this 2‑week Sewing Fundamentals & Garment Construction series, Instructor and Professional Sewist Joan Mathison will guide you through hands‑on practice of essential construction techniques commonly used in garment and craft sewing. You’ll learn which presser foot to use, how to adjust machine settings, and which tools support a successful sewing outcome. Each 2-week Sewing Fundamentals series focuses on methods and applications that can be used throughout the assembly process, and the skills taught are fully interchangeable. These 2‑week series can be taken in any order—take one, take all, or repeat a series to further hone your skills with Joan’s expert guidance.

In this series, we will cover: Garment Construction: Seams, Edge Finishing, Sleeves, Facings & Waistbands. There are several ways to approach and accomplish these construction techniques. The different methods will be introduced and practiced according to types of fabrics, garments and desired aesthetic outcome.

5-Week Ceramic Wheel Throwing: Clay to Kitchen Tools

Learn to throw ceramic kitchen tools!

Thursdays from 6 – 8pm

Learn to throw the tools you’ll actually use. In this beginner-friendly 5-week series, you’ll build a complete set of handmade kitchen tools on the wheel — a garlic grater, herb stripper, mug, berry bowl, and spoon rest — all made by your own hands. Each class introduces a new skill that builds on the last, moving from fundamental throwing and trimming techniques to altering forms and, in the final class, glazing. Whether you’re brand new to the wheel or looking to deepen your practice, you’ll leave with functional pottery, a stronger relationship with clay, and the confidence to keep going.

New Workshop Alert!
Wet Felted Glasses Case

Learn to wet felt a one-of-a-kind glasses case!

Beginners welcome! Ages 14+
Create a Handmade Piece That’s Uniquely Yours! Join us for this 3-hour exploration of the wonderful world of wet felting—an ancient textile art where soft, loose wool magically transforms into a beautiful, durable fabric! We’ll work with a wide selection of colorful merino wool, experimenting with color combinations and designs as you create your very own felted glasses case. You’ll learn the basics of wet felting as we wrap layers of wool around a resist (a piece of foam or plastic), then decorate the surface with wool yarn, pre-felt cutouts, and/or roving. Finally, using soap, water, and a mat for rolling, we’ll bind all the fibers together to create your felted fabric. Your glasses case will be made in one piece—with no seams or sewing required! Different case sizes will be available, so you can create the perfect fit for your reading glasses or favorite pair of sunglasses.

Whether you’re completely new to felting or already have some experience, this workshop is a chance to slow down, get your hands busy, and enjoy good company.

New workshop alert!

Intro to Batik: Art of Silk Painting

What is Batik? The centuries-old process involves drawing or stamping a resist onto fabric (in this case, silk), to block certain areas from receiving dye color. After dyeing the fabric, the resist is removed to show beautiful patterns.

Join our Batik workshop and discover the vibrant art of painting on silk fabric! By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a beautiful piece of silk that you can take home.

No prior experience is necessary—just bring your creativity!

All materials provided. Sign up at www.sandiegocraft.org

Exciting news! With generous support from the G.A. Foster Legacy Foundation, we're able to offer this upcycle your clothes class for a nominal fee! How does $10 sound?

Now is your chance!!!

Block Printing on Clothing: Upcycle Your Wardrobe

Normally $75.00, now offered for only $10.00.

Upcycling Fun!

Give new life to your wardrobe in this creative, beginner-friendly 2.5 hour workshop! Led by local-artist and printmaker Kasey Leung, you’ll learn how to design, carve, and hand-print your own original block, then use it to transform a piece of clothing you already own.

Bring a garment like a denim jacket, linen pants, cotton shirt, or canvas tote, and learn how to thoughtfully place your print to create a one-of-a-kind wearable piece. Feel free to come with ideas, inspiration, or printed reference images, keeping in mind that your design will need to fit within a 4×6 inch block. The best fabrics for block printing are natural fibers with smooth, tight weaves, such as cotton or linen. It’s best to avoid stretchy, heavily textured, or fuzzy fabrics like knit or wool.

No experience needed and all printing materials are provided. Just bring a few cotton or linen-based items, and we can work together to select the best one to print on! This workshop is all about personal expression, experimentation, and embracing the beauty of handmade imperfections. You’ll leave with a refreshed, uniquely yours piece of clothing and your carved block to keep creating at home.
