Ask Jonathan about his favorite part of his summer at Camp Surf, and he won't hesitate: seashells.

Jonathan is a Chula Vista Elementary School District student who lives just miles from the coast but rarely gets to explore it up close. At of San Diego County's Camp Surf in Imperial Beach, he joined more than 300 South County students learning about marine science, water quality and how to care for the coastline.

"It's just so beautiful," he said.

"When kids are aware, they understand how issues affect them," said Jamie Cosson of Camp Surf.

Camp Surf is supported through San Diego Foundation's Thrive Community of Practice, which brings schools and nonprofits together so more students can learn about the environment in and out of the classroom.

Some issues hit close to home. That's why we show up.

This year, your generosity powered 8,167 grants to 2,578 nonprofits, with 80% of that grantmaking staying right here in San Diego County. It reached food security and healthcare programs, K-12 schools and scholarships, clean water efforts, community gardens and more.

The Kyoto Prize Scholarship application is open!

Presented by the Kyoto Symposium Organization and San Diego Foundation, in collaboration with Japan’s Inamori Foundation, these scholarships recognize San Diego County high school seniors who demonstrate academic excellence and a strong commitment to serving their communities and society at large.

Worth up to $10,000 each, six scholarships are available based on the annual Kyoto Prize categories of Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, and Arts and Philosophy.
