San Diego Foundation We inspire enduring philanthropy and enable community solutions to improve the quality of life in our region. Learn more at SDFoundation.org.

In 1975, The San Diego Community Foundation was born (later renamed the San Diego Foundation). Founded by a group of civically-engaged San Diegans focused on addressing the challenges facing our region, the group recognized the need for a charitable organization that could serve a broad spectrum of philanthropic leaders and causes in San Diego. More than 50 years later, San Diego Foundation has gr

own into one of the Top 25 community foundations in the nation. With generous support from our local donors, and regional and national funders, The Foundation has granted more than $1 billion to San Diego nonprofit organizations. We salute the founders of the San Diego Foundation for their foresight in creating an innovative approach to community philanthropy, and we thank each generous donor and dedicated partner for their sincere desire to grow a vibrant San Diego region, together.

Beach pollution needs a solution. The decades-long Tijuana River sewage crisis closes beaches, affects neighborhoods and businesses, and creates health concerns for residents and visitors.

Measure B could fund projects that would capture and treat sewage, improve water quality, restore habitat and respond to health problems linked to the crisis.

Rebecca's daughter Adaeze is three months old, and it doesn't take much to make her mom's day: a laugh, a smile, a quiet moment together.

During her pregnancy, Rebecca received monthly support through SDF’s Born Well Guaranteed Income Program, help that gave her family a little more breathing room and a lot more hope.

Born Well has supported more than 880 mothers across the region so every child gets a strong start.

Students across Chula Vista Elementary School District are exploring San Diego's beaches, mountains and outdoor spaces with real scientific tools in hand, thanks to a new grant from REI Cooperative Action Fund to San Diego Foundation.

REI's support is expanding SDF's Gear Acquisition Program (GAP), which has provided 30 local nonprofits with more than 9,000 pieces of outdoor gear at no cost since 2023, everything from backpacks and boots to binoculars and magnifiers.

"It is incredibly meaningful to give all students access to the exact tools," said Karen Quirós, a science resource teacher with Chula Vista Elementary School District.

This year, that gear is helping Coastal Education Programs reach more than 7,000 TK-8th grade students.

When federal funding cuts put food, housing and health care programs at risk, San Diego Foundation created the San Diego Unity Fund to help local nonprofits maintain critical safety net services to help families in need.

This week, SDF announced $1.5 million plus in new grants, including support for Meals on Wheels San Diego County to help older adults stay nourished and stay independent. As Urban League of San Diego County's Al Abdallah put it: "This funding helps ensure more San Diegans can remain housed and hopeful."

When every child has the chance to learn and grow, San Diego grows with them.

Since launching in 2023 with a $1.5 million grant from San Diego Foundation through the Leon Williams Fund, BiGI has paired students with sustained mentorship, STEAM enrichment and family engagement designed to carry them from sixth grade through college. Students who complete the program and are accepted to USD have 100% of their demonstrated financial need met.

Welcoming our newest cohort into the seven-year program at the USD School of Leadership and Education Sciences.

Obidullah Mahmoodi arrived in San Diego from Afghanistan four years ago as a refugee, carrying a new language and the work of building a life from scratch. Today he’s headed to UC Irvine to study computer science.

“This scholarship will allow me to move forward without worrying about any financial burden,” he said.

This year, SDF’s Community Scholarship Program awarded a record $5.6M to 1,000+ students, the largest class yet. Applications for next year open this December.
