Created by Sasha Primo and Gloria Favela Rocha in collaboration with local youth groups and urban creators, the mural celebrates the agricultural heritage, landscapes, and growth that have shaped Escondido.

The newest addition to ECF’s ArtSpeaks initiative, Escondido Roots brings community-centered public art into shared spaces across the city.

This mural was made possible by generous private donations to ECF for Art and Beautification in Escondido.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the ribbon-cutting last week. If you haven’t seen Escondido Roots yet, we invite you to stop by and experience it for yourself.

The unveiling of Escondido Roots public mural is happening this Saturday, August 29.

Created by artists Sasha Primo and Gloria Favela Rocha in collaboration with local youth groups and urban creators, the project is part of ECF’s ArtSpeaks initiative, which brings community-centered public art to public spaces throughout Escondido.

The unveiling is also featured among upcoming events happening across San Diego County. Take a look at the roundup, then mark your calendar to experience the mural in person.

From local government and community service to leading the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, Jerry has spent decades helping shape the place so many of us call home.

His contributions have spanned public service, arts and culture, and civic engagement, earning him recognition as a North San Diego Business Chamber Business Leader of the Year in 2017.

From the first song to the final community portrait, the unveiling of the Kumeyaay Creation Story mural was about more than a new work of art.

It was a celebration of story, place, partnership, and community - bringing together artist Tim Topalov, City of Escondido, CCAE, and ECF representatives, Mayor Dane White, and community members who came together to celebrate this meaningful addition to Escondido’s public art landscape.

Last month, ECF members came together for our 2026 Ballot Dinner to consider this year’s grant proposals and the impact they can make in our community.

It was an evening of thoughtful conversations, shared perspectives, and a collective commitment to supporting organizations working to strengthen Escondido.

What goes into creating a mural that carries a story?

Artist Tim Topalov .n.form takes us behind the Kumeyaay Creation Story mural, sharing the inspiration and visual storytelling that shaped the artwork, from his research and artistic influences to the story unfolding across the mural.

He also reflects on the community partnerships that helped bring this project to life and expresses his gratitude to the Escondido Community Foundation.
