POV: You're a white seabass released into the ocean for the first time!

We're so grateful for all of our growout sites, schools, and partners that help us raise and release white seabass each year! As our hatchery teams works on raising up the most recent crop for deliveries this fall, we want you all to know we couldn't do this work without you!

Congratulations to the students of Mar Vista High School's Poseidon Academy on an incredible semester! A huge thank you to Sweetwater Union High School District, Ocean Connectors, and Las Patronas for making this opportunity possible and helping bring hands on aquaculture to more students! 💙

Last week our team rescued a young dolphin that was reported entangled in the Eau Gallie River, just off the Indian River Lagoon in Melbourne. Braided fishing line had become wrapped around and embedded at the base of her tail. We are immensely grateful to our standing network partners and our volunteers who made this massive effort possible. We are hopeful to see this dolphin nicknamed "Rony" heal and continue to grow! 💙🐬

Last week we gathered for a BBQ on the Bay and we're so grateful to everyone who joined us! 💙

Friends, family, students, donors, supporters, and partners came together to celebrate the work happening across Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute. We had a wonderful evening highlighting the growth of our aquaculture programs, expansion of Seabass in the Class, research from our Animal Behavior & Senses team, and an exciting update on the future of our organization and facilities!

Thank you to everyone who attended and to all of you who continue to support our mission. We're incredibly grateful to have you all as part of the HSWRI community! 🌊🐟

You may remember back in March when we shared the first glimpses of our green abalone broodstock!

Since then, these abalone have been adjusting well. So well in fact, that our dive team recently collected a few additional individuals.

Each abalone has been individually tagged which allows our researchers a way to monitor their growth, health, and progress over time.

Once abundant along the Southern California coast, green abalone were heavily over-harvested for both commercial and recreational fisheries, particularly after the collapse of the pink abalone fishery in the 1970s. Today, rebuilding the green abalone population is important not only for the future of the species, but also for restoring healthy, resilient coastal ecosystems to Southern California. We're excited to see what the future holds for these animals. Stay tuned for more abalone updates! 🌊
