NEST (Nurturing Exceptional Students and Teachers)

NEST (Nurturing Exceptional Students and Teachers) We are an all-volunteer 501c3 nonprofit, working together to support students of Sparrow Academy.

NEST (Nurturing Exceptional Students & Teachers) is a committed, not-for-profit community of parents, caregivers and staff at Sparrow Academy, a public Waldorf Charter School. We support the educational experience of our students via fundraising and volunteerism, in and out of the classroom, and within our surrounding community. Through NEST PTO we are able to implement supplemental, enriching activities for the children that feed their minds, hearts, and hands.

✨Make my life a little light
Within the world to glow
A little flame that burneth bright
Wherever I may go ✨

As the days shorten and grow darker, our TK - 2nd grade families gather for their annual Lantern Walks, a favorite Waldorf tradition. Slowly walking with handmade lanterns, they sing songs about light as their little lights guide their steps together.

Inspired by the story of St. Martin, a Roman soldier known for his act of compassion when he famously cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar on a cold night.

It’s a beautiful (and needed) pause and reminder to tend to the light within us and let it shine to those around us.

As we approach these darker days, may we each remember the light we carry — small acts of kindness, gestures of generosity, simple smiles and “hellos” — and how it all matters. 🌘

This week at Nestling Nursery was all about apples! We heard an apple story, made apples out of forming wax, cut apples for snack, and then went on a nature walk and tested our bravery with an obstacle course! See you all next week!

This morning we had our 2nd Nestling Nursery meetup! This week was all about leaves. We heard a story about the leaves changing colors, made some leaf people, played with some beeswax, helped some leaves dance (courtesy of a parachute), sang some songs and played with bubbles!

We meet every Wednesday and Collier Park at 9am! Free to attend and all are welcome. ❤️

Our third graders celebrated Rosh Hashanah today by making apple cake! They wrapped up their day by reading “The Apple Cake” and learning about the American history surrounding apples and of course they ate some apple cake.

🌻✨ Our first Nestling Nursery Playgroup was such a sweet success! ✨🌻
This morning we gathered for a Michaelmas-inspired morning — we heard the story of George, shaped beeswax swords, colored dragon scales, planted sunflower starters, and (of course!) played in the mud. 🌱🐉
It was a beautiful turnout, and such a joyful way to come together with our littlest Sparrows. 💛
If you missed today, we’d love to see you next time! Nestling Nursery is a caregiver-and-child playgroup where we tell seasonal stories, make simple crafts, and enjoy time together outdoors.
📅 Next gathering: September 24th at 9am
📍 Collier Park, La Mesa
✨ All families with young children are welcome — come connect, play, and grow with us!

Today was a special day! The students and staff showed their appreciation to our volunteers by serving coffee and pastries and the students showcased some of the things they have been working on.

In order to protect our students privacy these videos have been blurred.
