AIA San Diego is proud to recognize Lloyd Ruocco with the 2026 Legacy Award for his profound and lasting impact on architecture, design, and civic life in San Diego.

Architect, designer, urbanist, and advocate, Lloyd Ruocco helped shape the region's architectural identity throughout much of the twentieth century. Beginning in the 1940s, he championed a distinctly Southern California modernism, creating climate-responsive buildings that embraced indoor-outdoor living long before such principles became mainstream. His Fifth Avenue Design Center in Hillcrest served as a hub for contemporary architecture, design, and creative discourse, fostering a culture of innovation that influenced generations of practitioners.

Over the course of a career spanning more than 100 projects, Lloyd Ruocco advanced an integrated vision of the built environment, one that connected architecture, urbanism, interior design, graphics, and the visual arts. His contributions extended beyond design practice through his leadership in civic and cultural advocacy, including his involvement in organizations such as the Allied Artists' Council and Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C3), both of which helped elevate public dialogue around the future of San Diego.

For his extraordinary body of work, enduring influence, and commitment to design excellence and community engagement, Lloyd Ruocco is a deeply deserving recipient of the AIA San Diego Legacy Award.
