Yesterday, six members of the Minneapolis City Council signed on to the following statement of support for Local 26 condo workers fighting for a fair contract:

"We, the undersigned elected officials, stand with the unionized River Towers
Association, the La Rive Condominium Association, and the Riverview Condominium
Association condo workers who announced an unfair labor practice (“ULP”) strike
deadline of August 14, 2026. We urge the River Towers Association, the La Rive
Condominium Association, and the Riverview Condominium Association to bargain in
good faith as condo workers with SEIU Local 26 negotiate their first union contract.

Workers in this industry have been organizing for years to establish the same kinds of
high standards and job protections that other downtown property service workers enjoy.
As we continue work on revitalizing downtown, we recognize that the growing number of
buildings converting from commercial to residential will require increasing numbers of
these dedicated workers who make downtown living possible.

Condo workers work hard each day to keep downtown buildings safe. Minneapolis
needs good union jobs for workers and the condo residents they support. That’s why
we urge the River Towers Association, the La Rive Condominium Association, and the
Riverview Condominium Association to bargain in good faith, stop unfair labor practices,
and settle a fair contract with staff that ensures stable jobs, good healthcare, and pay
that keeps up with the cost of living.

We, as elected officials in Minneapolis, stand with the SEIU Local 26 condo workers
who watch over high-rise condos and help make Minneapolis a safe, vibrant, and livable
city."

🚨BREAKING🚨 Minneapolis Condo Workers With SEIU Local 26 Vote to Authorize ULP Strike as Push for Historic First Contract Drags On

MINNEAPOLIS – In response to evident violations of Federal labor law, and following months of bargaining that has still not resulted in a first union contract, a supermajority of the desk attendants at three major Minneapolis high-rise condominiums represented by SEIU Local 26 have voted to authorize an unfair labor practice (“ULP”) strike.

Their vote gives the ability to call a ULP strike at any point after July 24th, the date of the last scheduled bargaining session on the books between the two sides. After many years of organizing in the industry and multiple months at a joint bargaining table with all three home owners associations, Minneapolis desk attendants at River Towers, La Rive, and Riverview are hoping to end the evident ULPs and win first union contracts that ensure these are stable jobs with affordable healthcare and living wages. Residents have been speaking up too, with nearly 70 of them signing a petition in support of the workers’ proposals.

Michael Rubke, a desk attendant at La Rive and member of the bargaining committee, shared what brought the workers to this point:

"The associations have committed unfair labor practices like refusing to turn over information needed for bargaining.In addition, they have barely moved on wages and have rejected the union healthcare plan. That's why we decided it was time to take this authorization vote and prepare for action if necessary."

After seven bargaining sessions (plus three additional sessions cancelled by the employers), the bargaining committee decided unanimously after the July 14th bargaining session to call a vote of the desk attendants in the bargaining unit about whether to authorize a ULP strike. A supermajority emphatically voted yes in support of a ULP strike.

Lev Roth, a desk attendant at Riverview and member of the bargaining committee spoke about why winning a strong contract with job protections is so important:

“They say they can’t make any promises because they don’t know the future, but that’s exactly why we need guarantees. We asked for job security no matter who the management company is, but instead they offered us severance. They don’t seem to understand that we like our jobs and want to stay.”

If these condo workers go out on a ULP strike, it will be the fourth Twin Cities condo worker ULP strike in as many years. Condo workers have walked out multiple times since they publicly began pushing to win a union and better conditions in the growing industry in 2022.
