Last session of bargaining for the semester is done!!

Friday at 2pm, MUWU’s bargaining committee and more than 40 members of our Union came to the table ready to bargain. While administration refused to enter the bargaining room. When administration refused to enter the bargaining room, MUWU members in attendance discussed and voted to give Macalester the opportunity to show us the dignity and respect we deserve before resuming negotiations. We believe that refusing to allow workers in the room is a display of blatant disrespect for Macalester student-workers and is not reflective of the MUWU’s values of member ownership and transparency. In order to push back against exclusion and secrecy, we need YOU to get involved in order to keep the bargaining process honest and respectful for everyone.

1. Talk to your friends!! Talk to everyone!! Get them involved, sign the petition in our bio, tell them to sign the petition, and send Patricia Langer a LOT of strongly worded emails.
2. Show up when we take our petition to Patricia Langer at 12:50 on Thursday. More details coming!

Macalester Undergraduate Workers Union - UAW Local 5105 (MUWU-UAW) is proud to announce the beginning of contract negotiations with Macalester College,to negotiate our first Union contact.
MUWU-UAW represents over 1000 student workers at Macalester, with members working in the cafeteria, IT, preceptors, office assistants, lifeguards, and everyone in-between.
On Friday, January 30th MUWU-UAW presented a series of 10 proposals to the College, covering health and safety, union rights, and basic structures.
We are looking forward to building upon our productive relationship with the College and bargaining a first contract which embodies the voices of our members.

MUWU organizer Eliot B. answers another frequently asked question: why is bargaining and what can we ask for?

Many of us think that we can only bargain for things directly related to our workplace, and if we like our workplace why would we ask for anything else?

This is an understandable way of thinking, but we’re actually not limited by where we work!

🌟Anything that impacts our conditions as student workers on campus can count for bargaining. Keeping ICE off our campus, reduced price meal plans, or workplace protections for if we get a new boss are just some of the things we can fight for from Macalester. 🌟

As Eliot said, the sky’s the limit. So start dreaming big!🌟💙

We are so proud to be UAW members!

On September 9th, the Macalester Undergraduate Workers Union (MUWU) ratified an affiliation agreement with the UAW, becoming the newest members of UAW Region 4!

MUWU was formed by 1,100 student workers with an overwhelming 87% voting YES in February, creating the first undergraduate worker labor union in Minnesota and only the second at a private college in the USA. Soon after, MUWU reached out seeking to join our union because of the example UAW members have set in standing up and fighting back for workplace and economic justice!
