Macalester MPIRG

Macalester MPIRG Building student power on Macalester's campus since 1971 Founded by students in 1971, MPIRG currently works on eight colleges and universities across the state.

We are the largest organization in Minnesota that works with students to increase their effectiveness in the public policy arena, building skills such as strategic planning, research, grassroots organizing, and advocacy. MPIRG's agenda, determined each year by student representatives from MPIRG's member schools, has historically included environmental and consumer protection, affordable housing, w

omen's rights, fair trade, and good government. In addition to our statewide campaigns, each campus has their own initiatives that are determined by the individual chapters. At Macalester, we're working the following:

Democracy (Voter's rights & education; Electoral & campaign finance reforms)
Public Health (Mental health awareness, & removing toxins from our consumer products)
Environment (Green transportation, and a toxins-free environment)
Economic Justice (Affordable Housing, homelessness, and worker's rights campaigns)

Cafe Mac wants to know how they're doing. Today, Macalester students told them in explicit terms that when they fire members of our community without advance notice, the answer isn't "you're doing well." Stop by Cafe Mac to leave YOUR suggestions on how Cafe Mac should repair the harm it has done to workers who are otherly-abled. Namely, tell them to offer workers their jobs back!

Nine workers were recently fired en masse from Cafe Mac. Here's what you can do about it:

A group of students will be delivering the petition to rehire the employees tomorrow, Thursday 2/18 at 7:30AM. As many people need to be there as possible. Meet outside the campus center at 7:20AM.

In case you haven't signed already, here's the petition one more time: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/bon-appetit-rehire-hardworking-employees

Bon Appétit Management Company claims to be "food service for a sustainable future." But what kind of future are they fighting for if they'll sink so low as to fire disabled workers?

Macalester Econ Justice MPIRGers delivered this letter to President Brian Rosenberg today. We wanted him to know that the student body hasn't forgotten about the resolution that was passed last Spring on income inequality via the student assembly.

Also, in the spirit of Halloween, we included 7.5 “100 Grand” candy bars to accompany the President's salary of approximately the
same value. As a point of comparison, many subcontracted workers would only get about one fifth of a candy bar per year.
