Interact Center for Visual and Performing Arts

Interact Center for Visual and Performing Arts Creating art that challenges perceptions of disability. Our staff artists are all practicing artists with a focus on the unique abilities of every individual.

Interact’s mission is to create art that challenges perceptions of disability and it is the only organization of its kind nationally or internationally – a place where over 100 artists with disabilities create original theater and visual arts each and every day. In our spirit of radical inclusion, Interact is multi-cultural and intergenerational and we embrace the entire spectrum of disability lab

els. Interact has opened up new horizons for artists with disabilities from whom very little may have been expected, but whose lives have now been transformed as talented, creative, contributing members of our world. Everyday, for both artists and audiences, our work expands ideas of what is possible through the transformative power of the arts in both our theater and visual arts studio. ✨ Now on view at Interact Gallery ✨ “Fresh Work V,” which features recent works by 73 current Interact artists.

The large faces and yellow mask in the first three slides are by Kandis O., who has practiced at Interact since 2021. Kandis creates energetic portraits that study character and mood. “I like to sit back and watch people for a bit, see what they’re all about,” she says. “I watch to see how they move, how they interact with someone else, how they respond to things.”

Kandis has a longstanding practice of repurposing found materials in her work. “When I was younger, my mom would take the old shades down, and that was my drawing canvas,” she says. “I took old pieces of wood and carved people out of them.” Her recent sculptures incorporate objects from around the house, discarded items she’s gifted by friends, and scrap materials from around her neighborhood. “I think landfills are too big, and if I can make art of something, that’s even more positive. It tests me to see what I can do with something, to see something in it. I’m hoping I can spark a feeling, and people can relate to it, and it makes them feel better or something different.”

Swipe through for a video of Kandis working in the studio earlier this summer, and come check out her work in “Fresh Work V,” on view through November 3. 🗓️

We are thrilled to share that the Frances Mulhall Achilles Library at the Whitney Museum of American Art has acquired two artist books by Victor Van. 🎊 The acquisition follows two other major museum acquisitions of Van’s work earlier this year, made by the Walker Art Center and the Minnesota Historical Society. The Whitney’s acquisition was initiated during the Outsider Art Fair in New York.

Exploring translations of found text, audio, images, and animations, Van’s books are part of a larger body of work that he has continued for over a decade. In “Old Battleships by saye0036,” Van transcribes found text from the website fanfiction.net, creating a devotional physical form for a story that was posted on the message board in 2016. Over the course of 384 pages, Van handwrites the story in ink, incorporating elements of the Kingsman and James Bond movie franchises. In “KS95 Best Variety Songs 2017-18,” Van transcribes the lyrics of songs that played on the Twin Cities radio station over a two-year period. His handwriting, which is so small that it is hardly legible, fills hundreds of pages.

Van’s books will be added to the Whitney’s Frances Mulhall Achilles Library, a comprehensive research collection in the field of twentieth century and contemporary American art. Of paramount importance to American art research and scholarship, the library’s collections of books, periodicals, archives, and special collections are accessed by the Whitney’s own staff as well as by visiting scholars, researchers, and the public.

Van (b. 1993) has practiced at Interact since 2016. He presented his debut solo exhibition, Great Expectations, at Open Studio Gallery in New York earlier this year, in conjunction with a showing of his work at the Outsider Art Fair.

✨Congratulations, Victor! ✨

🌪️ Scenes from “Welcome Home: 18 Influential Voices from the Interact Studio,” one of two exhibitions currently on view at Interact Gallery. Aligning with our 30th anniversary, “Welcome Home” features 6 alumni alongside 12 current Interact artists, each with tenures of 18 years or more.

Matt Zimdars has called Interact his studio since 1999! 💛

Zimdars uses his art practice to catalog his visual interests, from future dream homes and nostrils to severe weather. He is an archivist by nature, developing careful systems, folders, packets, and books for storing the things he collects. Zimdars’ WCCO series explores weather systems in the Midwest and the station whose forecasts he followed diligently for years. In these works, Zimdars combines satellite imagery, weather maps, and text to create patchwork pastel compositions, finding a sublime beauty in schematics.

This suite of oil and chalk pastel drawings dates back to the early 2000s. Click through for some 2025 portraits of Zimdars and his advocate, Presley Martin, with this body of work.

📡 And send us a message to check out these beauties in person. The exhibition runs through September 3!

A Memo from the Factory Floor: Greetings from the assembly line at Boxes Inc! The visual arts wish list was so successful that we decided to post the performing arts wish list for our upcoming show in a few short months! Our brand new, all original show is starting to take shape and there are a few items that we would love to have. To break free from the daily grind and ignite the sparks of whimsy, romance, and joy that make our "true-ish" comedy musical shine, the employees of Boxes Inc. need a few essential items for our factory floors, stifling office spaces and the dreaded HR waiting room. . .
Many supporters of Interact have asked how they can directly help support the work we do in the theater and one of the ways could be helping us secure the following production needs: Performing Arts Prop Wish List https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/GM9O2Z22RUF7/ref=hz_ls_biz_ex

📦✨ We’re SO excited to announce Interact’s new original fall musical: Boxes Inc.! ✨📦

A true-ish comedy about poking holes in the tight spaces we find ourselves in.

Step into the deliciously drab, breathtakingly beige and strictly ordered world of Boxes Inc., where life is measured in cardboard folds and the daily grind feels endless. But behind the soul-crushing routine of this hopelessly mundane box factory, a quiet rebellion of the creative spirit is brewing.

This original "true-ish" comedy musical, based on Interact artist’s own stories of hope, heart and hilarity, pits assembly lines and rigid efficiency against sudden sparks of whimsy, unexpected romance, and the occasional, unstoppable outburst of pure joy. Boxes Inc. is a touching celebration of finding light in the dark, choosing connection over monotony, and always, always following your bliss.💛
