Providing equitable access to music, collaboration, and opportunity in Saint Paul There are now 70+ programs nationwide and 50+ additionally worldwide.

Partnered with the school system, we are an ensemble and community-based, time intensive program that believes every child should have access to the transformative power of music. We are inspired by the global music ensemble phenomenon El Sistema that uses music to develop a transferable set of life skills such as leadership, problem solving, and musicianship. We are an inclusive, collaborative, accessible, community solution to the participation disparity in lower-income families in afterschool programs.

We are so grateful that Josh Januschka will be joining us at Find Your Pride to offer a drop-in mental health support zone! Josh is a licensed mental health professional in the Twin Cities who specializes in working with trans and LGBTQIA+ communities. In the mental health support zone, youth will have access to local mental health resources, mindfulness techniques and grounding skills education to help manage stress, and a low-pressure quiet space to decompress and get away from the crowd.

She is currently studying music and audio engineering, and is excited to share her expertise at Find Your Pride in the workshop “Literary Lyricals,” which explores the craft of songwriting! Participants will listen to music together, learn about how lyrics can tell a story, and write their own lyrics!

The next Find Your Pride presenter we’re spotlighting is Samantha Holt, a visual artist, photographer, and filmmaker. Samantha combines painting, sculpture, media arts, and wearable art to share her belief that the world can be a more colorful and positive place. Her session “Express Yourself with Zines, Collage, and Mixed Media” is a hands-on exploration of zine-making where participants have access to art supplies, collage materials, and dedicated time to craft the story they want to share with the world around them.

We have some amazing presenters who will be joining us for Find Your Pride next month! Meet Mari Ésabel Valverde, an award-winning transgender Mexican-American composer, who will lead the session “Finding Your Authentic Voice.” Drawing on her experiences teaching classical voice and transgender voice training, she will share her story, lead attendees in song, and offer resources to artists as they grow into their own voices.

This summer was full of music, creativity, and community at ComMUSICation! Around 200 youth joined us for a summer full of growth and buzzing with activity. We offered our biggest Gospel Choir Camp yet, partnered with the YMCA Beacons summer school to offer ukulele, piano, and drumming, and collaborated with St. Paul Community Education to offer ukulele and songwriting classes.

Summer programs are important - they give young people the support they need outside of school to grow, make friends, and explore their interests. According to a recent America after 3pm study, more than 40% of families in Minnesota who want summer programs for their children are unable to access them due to barriers like cost or transportation. At CMC, we’re working to eliminate many of the barriers that families face to ensure that all youth have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music each summer.

Thank you to all the youth, families, volunteers, staff, supporters, and audience members who made this summer unforgettable!
