We are honored to highlight the work of Tom, an artist, storyteller, educator, and advocate whose anti-trafficking artwork will be featured at MSP Airport from June 1 through the end of November.

After 30 years in education, Tom continues to have a commitment to learning, storytelling, prevention, and community through his art and advocacy. Guided by his faith, Tom became involved in anti-trafficking work after his pastor invited him into the movement in 2018. Since then, his heart has been especially drawn to survivors because of the isolation and lack of community so many experience.
His work also extends into prevention and demand reduction through his men’s ministry, where he focuses on educating men about the harm caused by commercial s*xual exploitation.

Some of Tom’s main anti-trafficking pieces will be shown at MSP in Concourse C, including Trauma and Treasure, which were created in collaboration with Breaking Free survivors. This exhibit will run from June 1st through the end of November.
Tom sees himself as a storyteller. His goal is not for the work to be perfect or to be considered a masterpiece. His hope is that people will stop, engage, ask questions, and see the artwork as a call to action.

We are deeply grateful for Tom’s partnership, his heart for survivors, and his commitment to using art as a way to build awareness, compassion, and change.
If you will be traveling through the MSP Airport during the exhibit, please consider taking pictures or video, posting on social media, and tagging “Witness Arts.”

This Mother’s Day, we honor that everyone’s experience looks different.
For some, it is a day of celebration. For others, it may hold complexity, reflection, or healing. We recognize that each experience is valid, and that this day can carry many different meanings.
At Breaking Free, we also want to take a moment to recognize the survivors we serve who are mothers. We see the strength it takes to build stability, to create new paths forward, and to show up each day with care and intention.
Today, we honor all who nurture, protect, and support others in ways both seen and unseen.
Who is someone you are holding in mind today? 💙

Today I want to take a minute and thank Breaking Free for their tireless work on behalf of trafficking survivors and their families in Saint Paul since 1996. Each leader and staff member I have had the pleasure to partner with has taught me so much. One quote for today: "We are not talking about the world's oldest profession. We are talking about the world's oldest OPPRESSION." This is a picture of "Trauma" which shares Breaking Free survivors answered the question: "What has been the impact of trafficking on your life?" You can learn more about our collaboration here: https://www.witnessarts.net/witness-walk

Our outreach bus is looking for a home 🚌💛

She’s about 10 feet tall, full of purpose, and helps us show up for our community in meaningful ways. Now we’re just trying to find her a cozy indoor spot to rest between outings.
If you know of a garage, warehouse, or indoor space in St. Paul that might be a good fit, we’d love to hear from you.
Know a place (or a person who might)? Drop a comment or send us a message! We would be so grateful.

As Sexual Assault Awareness Month comes to a close, we are reminded that awareness is only the beginning.
Behind every statistic is a person who deserves safety, stability, and support. Survivors need more than recognition. They need access to housing, advocacy, and long-term healing resources.
At Breaking Free, that work continues every single day. Because while April raises awareness, our commitment to survivors does not end when the month does.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to learn, listen, and stand alongside survivors this month. Your support makes this work possible.
What is one way you plan to continue supporting survivors beyond April?

Advocate Spotlight
For our next Advocate Spotlight, we are honored to introduce one of our advocates, Stacy. Advocacy work requires presence, adaptability, and deep care. Advocates walk alongside survivors through uncertainty, offering consistency and support while honoring each person’s autonomy and path forward.
“Being able to see the happiness and safety I can provide for individuals long term, along with the amount of personal growth and strength I can see in survivors.”
This is what confirmed for Stacy that this work is where she is meant to be.
On survivor-centered support:
“Meeting clients where they are at and showing up for them… making sure I pack those extra special touches like cute hair accessories or makeup bags that we get through donation. I feel like that is very human and we all need self-care.”
On what success looks like:
“Being consistent with clients and providing a level of comfort so that clients feel safe and heard. Success can look like a client opening up to you, showing up prepared, taking control of their life, and continuing the work toward their own goals. Each advocate needs to see what success means for that individual and their situation.”
On staying grounded:
“Spending time with friends and family. Taking regular breaks and checking in with myself and how I’m feeling. As well as moving my body in a healthy way through yoga, rock-climbing, and running.”
On what people should better understand:
“Persecuting the survivor for the crimes of the perpetrator will not create a society focused on healing and growth. It will continue to perpetuate a society where survivors are afraid to speak up for fear of being prosecuted.”
And on hope:
“The number of passionate individuals fighting for the safety of survivors. Advocates are working around the clock to provide safe spaces for the care and support that is so deeply needed.”
We are grateful for Stacy and the compassion, intention, and strength she brings to this work every day.

This Earth Day, we’re thinking about what it means to have a place that is truly safe.
For many survivors of exploitation and trafficking, healing begins with stability. Safe housing. Clean, reliable resources. A community that supports long-term wellbeing.
The environments we live in shape what is possible for us. When people have access to safe, healthy spaces, they are better able to heal, rebuild, and move forward.
At Breaking Free, survivor care includes creating environments where that healing can happen. Because everyone deserves a place where they can feel safe, supported, and grounded.
Happy Earth Day from Breaking Free! 🌍
