Okayyy, the comments got a little spicy on some of our reels 🌶️😂 and we got a few questions like this, so we’ll probably turn this into a little series!

Trafficking is complicated, and one of the realities people don’t always realize is that sometimes the person trafficking a child is a parent, family member, or another trusted adult. That can make the question of “why can’t they just go home?” a whole lot more complicated.

Children coming out of s*x trafficking can also be navigating complex trauma, PTSD, substance use, self-harm, disrupted education, and a whole lot more.

That’s a big part of why we’re building Cedar Refuge 🌲 Specialized care, trained adults, therapy, education, safety, stability, and a place designed to handle the hard parts of healing too.

These are heavy conversations, but good questions are welcome. 🤍

🚨 Did you know one of our non-negotiables for Cedar Refuge is that every child will have their own private bedroom and bathroom? 🚨

We know this will likely add to our building costs once we purchase property, but we believe it is incredibly important.

For a child who has experienced s*x trafficking or s*xual trauma, privacy can mean so much more than having a room to yourself.

It can mean having a door that is yours.
A bathroom where you can feel safe and unobserved.
A space where your belongings stay where you left them.
The ability to choose when you want quiet and when you want connection.
A place that reinforces the message that your body, your boundaries, and your personal space deserve to be respected.

We want every child at Cedar Refuge to have a space that feels secure, stable, and truly theirs.

A bedroom and bathroom may seem like a small detail in the scope of building an entire refuge, but we believe details like these matter when you are creating an environment designed for healing, dignity, confidence, and safety.

These numbers are heartbreaking.

Children who have experienced s*x trafficking often carry trauma that goes far beyond what most people ever see, including self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and su***de attempts.

Healing isn’t complete at the point of recovery.
It begins there.

This is why specialized healing care matters.

Not just rescue.
Not just short-term safety.

Long-term healing. Safe adults. Stability. Therapy. A place where childhood can be restored.❤️‍🩹

If you’re new here, we are Cedar Refuge, and we’re building a refuge for the healing and restoration of children who have been s*xually exploited in America.🌲

“Why didn’t they just leave?” The answer to this question is most often answered when we understand the definition of “coercion”.

Coercion is when someone uses threats, intimidation, manipulation, pressure, or fear to control another person’s choices or behavior.

In s*x trafficking, coercion does not always look like physical force. It can sound like:

💬 “If you leave, I’ll hurt your family.”
💬 “You owe me money, so you have to keep working.”
💬 “No one else will want you.”
💬 “If you tell anyone, I’ll expose you.”
💬 “I’m the only person who can take care of you.”

Over time, these threats and manipulations can make a victim feel trapped and afraid to leave. 🔒

Understanding coercion helps us understand why trafficking is far more complicated than simply asking, “Why didn’t they just leave?”

Steven and Quinn shucking corn together for dinner. 🌽❤️

They’re my (Brandyn’s) favorite duo.

When we share simple moments like this, we can’t help but think about the children who will one day be part of moments like these at Cedar Refuge.

Shucking corn. Feeding animals. Sitting around the dinner table. Doing chores together. Just ordinary, everyday life.

It’s easy to skip over the mundane moments, but sometimes those are the very moments that rebuild a sense of belonging, safety, and peace.

The simple moments matter. ❤️

Today we got a message asking when Cedar Refuge is going to open.

Another organization has located a teen boy who has experienced s*x trafficking here in the United States, and they are looking for a safe, long-term healing home for him.

And right now, there are no known long-term residential programs in the U.S. dedicated specifically to minor males recovering from s*x trafficking.💔

We know the statistics. We’ve spent countless hours researching the need, talking with programs, developing our model, navigating licensing, building budgets, and preparing to raise the funds necessary to open.

But messages like this make the need painfully real.

There is a child who needs a place now.💔

We aren’t open yet. We can’t receive him yet. And that is incredibly hard to sit with.

This is why we are building Cedar Refuge.

A place where children who have experienced s*xual exploitation can find safety, stability, trauma-informed care, education, healthy relationships, and the time and space they need to heal.

We’re working as quickly and responsibly as we can to bring this refuge to life.

Please pray for this boy, for the people working to find him a safe placement, and for Cedar Refuge as we continue moving toward opening our doors.

Just another day of farm antics… the horses broke out. 😂🐴

Thankfully, everyone is back where they belong, safe and sound. Horses will definitely keep you on your toes, but there’s something incredibly special about these animals.

They’re powerful, sensitive, intuitive, and deeply relational. And those qualities are part of why we believe horses can be such a meaningful part of the healing environment for children who have experienced trauma.

They respond to body language. They notice changes in emotion. They invite connection without demanding words. Caring for them can build confidence, responsibility, trust, and a sense of calm and regulation.

And sometimes, you get to see that sensitivity in the sweetest ways.

Brandyn is pregnant, and lately at feeding time the horses will come over to greet her like normal… and then pause for a moment to nuzzle her belly. Seems like they’re checking in on the newest little member of the Cedar Refuge crew. 🥹

There’s just a depth to these animals that’s hard to explain until you experience it.

At Cedar Refuge, we dream of children who have experienced s*x trafficking getting to experience moments like these too. Not because horses magically heal trauma, but because healing can happen through safe relationships, meaningful responsibility, new experiences, and the opportunity to simply slow down and feel safe.

Even if those same horses occasionally decide the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence. 😂

Farm life keeps us humble. And apparently keeps us running.😅

Whiskeytown Lake is so peaceful. It’s one of our favorite places on earth. Peace is possibly the most valuable resource on earth. The Bible says God will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in Him. It is a gift of trust.

Building a home for minors who have been s*x trafficked is a big undertaking but we are trusting God fully and 100% desire to stay in peace. There is simply no better place to be. 🕊️
