Shasta County Fire Safe Council

Shasta County Fire Safe Council SCFSC is a 501(c)(3) that helps protect citizens, and property from the effects wildland fires.

The Shasta County Fire Safe Council's main goal is to protect lives, property, and the natural resources in Shasta County from the devastating effects of wildfires. Our primary focus is on:

*Educating the public about the dangers of wildfires and how to prevent them.
*Helping neighborhoods stay safe from the effects of wildfires by sharing information and organizing more Firewise groups.
*Improvi

ng escape routes for leaving in a fire emergency and giving quick access to emergency firefighting resources.
*Lowering the chance of damaging wildfires by reducing fuels that can catch fire and threaten homes.
*Supporting fire safe communities by securing grant funding for fuels reduction and other fire safe projects. We currently support twelve Firewise Community groups in Shasta County. We provide educational materials, hold meetings, and raise funds to manage their costs like printing, outreach programs, as well as food and drinks for community events. These groups help us share important information with people about wildfire prevention and how to be ready. With your help we can continue to develop fuel reduction projects, so that together we keep Shasta County safe from the devastating effects of wildfires.

A well-maintained irrigation system is a key part of wildfire preparedness.

Keeping vegetation hydrated can reduce its flammability and help protect your property.

Steps To Follow:

🔥 Inspect for Damage: Check for leaks, broken sprinkler heads, or clogged nozzles that could affect performance.

🔥 Adjust Sprinklers: Make sure sprinklers are watering plants and not non-vegetative areas like driveways or sidewalks.

🔥 Set a Schedule: Water plants regularly to keep them healthy, but avoid overwatering to conserve resources.

By maintaining your irrigation system, you’re taking an important step toward wildfire safety and community resilience.

What is a Firewise community?

It’s a neighborhood that bands together to reduce wildfire risks by taking proactive steps like clearing brush, creating defensible spaces, and working as a team to protect homes and landscapes.

Here’s how you can make an impact:

🔥 Clear Flammable Materials: Remove any flammable items, such as dry leaves, firewood, or debris, within 5 feet of your home. This reduces the risk of flames reaching your house.

🔥 Maintain a 30-Foot Zone: Keep plants well-spaced, healthy, and free of dead vegetation within 30 feet of your home. This helps slow the spread of fire and creates a buffer zone.

🔥 Extend to 100 Feet: Thin out trees and shrubs, and remove ladder fuels (vegetation that allows fire to climb from the ground to tree canopies) up to 100 feet from your home. This minimizes the chance of fire spreading rapidly.

By creating a defensible space, you’re not only protecting your property but also contributing to the safety of your community.
