Headed to National FASD Impact Week!

Our Program Manager, Lauren Borchert, is excited to represent Proof Alliance NC at FASD United’s National FASD Impact Week, September 27–30 in the Washington, D.C., area!

This year, Lauren will also serve as an official Engager during the FASD Symposium. Engagers help facilitate meaningful and powerful conversations, encourage participation, and ensure diverse perspectives and experiences are heard as participants work together to identify priorities for the future of the FASD field.

Impact Week brings together people with FASD, families, advocates, researchers, professionals, and community partners from across the country to learn, connect, advocate, and move the FASD field forward.

We’re excited for Lauren to bring North Carolina’s voice to the conversation and bring new ideas, connections, and resources back to our state.

Let’s make an IMPACT! ❤

Let’s Talk About FASD. More People Need to Know.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are more common than many people realize. Yet they remain widely misunderstood and often go unrecognized.

Research estimates that as many as 1 in 20 children in the United States may have an FASD. Think about what that could mean in a classroom, a neighborhood, or your own community.

And yet, many families have never heard of FASD. Educators and healthcare professionals may not recognize the signs. Families can spend years searching for answers and appropriate support.

That’s why awareness matters.

When we better understand FASD, we can better support people living with it. We can recognize that behaviors may be symptoms of a brain-based disability. We can replace judgment with understanding. And we can help families find resources and support that meet their needs.

Awareness is also an important part of prevention. During pregnancy, there is no known safe amount of alcohol, no safe type of alcohol, and no safe time to drink. Sharing that message without judgment or stigma can help people make informed decisions and prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancies.

Learn. Share. Support. Advocate.

The more we talk about FASD, the more we can change how it is understood and supported across North Carolina.

👀 Watch Your Step!

You may notice an important message popping up under your feet across North Carolina.

Our Clean Graffiti campaign is bringing the message “Alcohol & Pregnancy Don’t Mix” directly to high-traffic areas around college campuses, football stadiums, bars, and near the Carolina Panthers stadium in Charlotte.

And here's the cool part: it's not actually paint! Clean graffiti uses a stencil and pressure washing to clean the message into the pavement. No paint. No permanent markings. Just a creative way to put an important prevention message where people might least expect it.

The goal is simple: get people talking. By reaching people in places where alcohol is often part of the social environment, we're creating opportunities to raise awareness about alcohol and pregnancy and help prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancies.

So the next time you're headed to class, grabbing dinner, meeting friends, or walking to the big game...

Watch your step. You might just find the PROOF.

Spotted Across North Carolina! 👀

This spring and summer, our “Alcohol & Pregnancy Don’t Mix” billboard campaign hit the road, bringing an important prevention message to communities across North Carolina.

From highways to busy community corridors, these billboards helped us reach thousands of North Carolinians with a simple message that can make a lifelong difference: during pregnancy, there is no known safe amount of alcohol, no safe type, and no safe time to drink.

Billboards are just one part of our larger effort to increase awareness, prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancies, and connect people with trusted information about fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).

And while the spring and summer campaign may be wrapping up, the message doesn't stop here. Prevention starts with awareness, conversation, and all of us working together.

Have you spotted one of our billboards around North Carolina? Tell us where in the comments!

September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about prenatal alcohol exposure and recognize the individuals and families impacted by FASD.

This year, we are especially proud to share that Proof Alliance NC, together with The Arc of North Carolina and NC FASD Informed, helped create a proclamation officially recognizing September as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month in North Carolina. The proclamation was signed by Governor Josh Stein!

Throughout September, we encourage North Carolinians to learn more, share accurate information, help prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancies, reduce stigma, and advocate for the services and supports needed by people with FASD and their families.

👠❤ Awareness matters. Education matters. Support matters. And prevention starts with all of us.
