What does it mean to build a family beyond blood ties?

Our latest blog tells the inspiring story of Mariama Manga Gómez, a teacher, social worker, and mother who has opened her home and heart to 40 children in The Gambia.

Written by Woman Boss intern Victoria Arencibia, this powerful piece explores Maria’s journey, her commitment to children in need, and the extraordinary Care House she has built in Lamin.

Our Programs Manager, Mariama Jammeh, is currently in Beijing, China 🇨🇳 attending the international seminar on “Sci-Tech Innovation and Women’s Development.”

The seminar brings together women from developing countries across Africa and Latin America to exchange experiences and explore the intersection of science, technology, innovation, and women’s advancement. Key discussions focus on bridging the gender gap in technology, promoting gender-inclusive innovation, and learning strategies that can help drive women’s development in our respective countries.

We are grateful to China Aid and China Women’s University for hosting this important program, and to The Gambia’s Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare for the nomination opportunity.

We look forward to bringing back valuable insights that can contribute to inclusive growth and women’s empowerment!

At Pirang Upper and Senior Secondary School we wrapped up the final Sister Circle Leadership session with and .

It’s been such a privilege visiting every school along the way—learning alongside the girls, speaking openly about empowerment, leadership, and advocacy, and watching their confidence grow in real time.

We hope they take as much from these conversations as we’ve learned from them.

It is a pleasure to continue learning and engaging with these young girls. Watching them open up, share honestly, and take charge of the conversation shows exactly why creating safe spaces for their voices matters.

At Kafuta Upper and Senior Secondary School, the Sister Circle Leadership session with and didn’t just feel like a discussion—it became a real space for conversation.

The girls didn’t hold back. They spoke openly, shared honestly, and carried the conversation with confidence once it started flowing.

It’s in these moments you see the real shift—the confidence that grows when girls are given a safe space where their voices are taken seriously.

At Pirang Senior Secondary School, the Sister Circle Leadership session with and turned into real conversation — not the kind where students just nod along, but the kind where girls actually say what’s on their minds.

That’s the part people don’t always see. The shift that happens when girls feel safe enough to take up space.

The girls at Kuloro Senior Secondary School didn’t need help finding their voices. They needed a space where using them felt safe.

That’s what made this Sister Circle Leadership session with and different. Once the conversation opened up, the room carried itself.

Sometimes the most important thing you can give girls is the feeling that they don’t need permission to speak.
