Fall has arrived, which means we have new specials at the Mendoza Cafe. 🍂 🥧 🌿

This month, we are launching TWO new seasonal syrups and THREE new cafe specials.

🥗 Try our new seasonal veggie salad! A crunchy fall salad made with kale, broccoli, apples, pepitas, ribboned carrots, pickled onion, candied almonds, and feta, topped with orange poppy seed dressing.

🥖…or the new veggie meatball sub, served on a hoagie from Good Dough (Good Dough), topped with homemade marinara sauce and Parmesan cheese.

🍄‍🟫…or the new breakfast toast, made with a mushroom and walnut spread, topped with melted Swiss cheese, a poached egg, and balsamic glaze, served on toasted sourdough from Good Dough.

Get ready for Michael Lewis on October 29 with tonight’s rebroadcast of our radio show and podcast, The Archive Project!

In this conversation from the 2023 Portland Book Festival, Lewis discusses his book GOING INFINITE, which explores the rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency hedge fund and exchange.

Lewis had unrestricted access to Bankman-Fried, spending over a year reporting as he amassed one of the largest fortunes in the world and then lost everything as his businesses collapsed. He offers a perspective on Bankman-Fried and many of his closest colleagues that is rooted in understanding their deeper motives, how they were shaped as a generation, and why they made the mistakes they did. The conclusion is startling and important to reckon with, regardless of whether you followed the case closely.

On September 24, 2026, we kicked off our 2026/27 season of Portland Arts & Lectures with the return of George Saunders to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Saunders previously joined us for PAL back in 2017.

🏫 Saunders visited students at McDaniel High School to discuss his book VIGIL with Dave Miller on OPB's radio show Think Out Loud. You can revisit this episode on OPB’s website and listen to all the insightful questions students had.

📖 Pictured in these slides is local librarian Nancy Sullivan, long-time friend and partner of Literary Arts’ youth programs!

✍️ After a great conversation with the students at McDaniel, Saunders joined us at Literary Arts for a writers’ forum. Local Oregon Book Awards & Fellowship authors met with him to discuss writing and craft.

🎤 We finished the night with an amazing lecture at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Saunders was joined on stage by our very own Andrew Proctor for a quick Q&A.

On tonight’s special rebroadcast of our radio show and podcast, The Archive Project, we honor the life of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Dillard, who passed away this month at the age of 81.

Dillard was an incredibly talented writer who published more than a dozen titles, including book-length nonfiction, novels, essays, and criticism, while also teaching for more than 25 years at universities in the Pacific Northwest. In 2015, she was awarded the National Humanities Medal for her life’s work.

In this talk from 1989, she reads from her books PILGRIM AT TINKER CREEK and TEACHING A STONE TO TALK. Whether she is describing muskrats in Virginia or witnessing an eclipse in the Yakima Valley, she draws profound insights from the natural world and what it can tell us about ourselves.

Literary Arts is honored to have collaborated with such an influential writer.
