Today, at the 2026 Green Sports Alliance Summit, we presented the inaugural Bill Walton Global Champion Award to Jason Collins.

Jason made history as the first openly gay active male athlete across the NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL — an act of courage that changed sports forever.

Jason Collins shared, “I’m deeply grateful to the Green Sports Alliance and the Walton family for this honor. Bill didn’t just speak about what mattered—he showed up for it. He stood up for people who didn’t always have a voice, for the environment, and for anyone facing challenges that others might overlook.”

Lori Walton, Bill’s widow, said in her heartfelt message, “Bill’s unwavering commitment to doing what is right rather than what is popular, makes Jason Collins the perfect inaugural recipient of the Bill Walton Global Champion Award.”

This award honors those who show up — for people and for what’s right. Congratulations, Jason! We are all better for your courage.

🌍 Celebrating Tradewater's Impact on Green Sports Day and at Symposium 🌱

The Green Sports Alliance is proud to spotlight our collaboration with Tradewater, whose high-integrity carbon credits are helping the sports community take meaningful climate action.

💡 Each year on Green Sports Day, we ask stadiums and venues around the world to light up green to bring awareness to the sports greening movement and to celebrate the cultural influence of sports in our communities. As part of Green Sports Day 2025, Tradewater provided carbon credits to offset part of the estimated emissions associated with the lighting of these venues.

🚙 Tradewater also donated credits for our Strategy & Revenue Generation Symposium at Gillette Stadium, which allowed us to offset some of the emissions impacts of transportation and our event operations.

Both of these events retired credits through Tradewater’s U.S. ODS 9 Project (https://heyor.ca/ndXnwu)–a critical effort to locate and permanently destroy “super-pollutants,” such as old refrigerants and ozone-depleting substances. These gases, often forgotten in aging equipment or abandoned canisters, can be up to 16,200 times more potent than CO₂ when released into the atmosphere.

Although the Montreal Protocol banned their production decades ago, millions of these cylinders remain worldwide. Tradewater serves as the cleanup crew, finding and eliminating these hidden climate threats before they leak out and cause irreversible harm.

For over a decade, Tradewater has led this work globally, earning top integrity ratings (ACR-verified: https://heyor.ca/hllWXM) for quality, transparency, and measurable impact in the voluntary carbon market.

Through this collaboration, Green Sports Alliance is contributing to these efforts to help address hard-to-abate emissions from sports events–including transportation, energy use, and more.

🏅 Together, we’re proving that sports can be a powerful force for climate action. Join us as we continue advancing solutions that protect our planet and strengthen the future of the games we love.

On this Giving Tuesday, we’re proud to support the Green Sports Alliance Foundation’s “Playing for the Next Generation” campaign, empowering Gen Z and Gen Alpha through sports, sustainability, and workforce development.

Earlier this month, over 80 students from 11 schools turned Gillette Stadium into a hands-on classroom, exploring real careers in energy, construction, sustainability, technology, AI, engineering, and the skilled trades that keep major venues and our communities running.

This campaign is building a national model of Workforce Development Huddles to:
- Connect students to high-demand STEM, STEAM, and trades careers.
- Open doors for under-resourced youth with scholarships, mentorship, and career exposure.
- Scale to NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, collegiate, and K–12 venues across the country.

With more than 2 million STEM/STEAM/trades-related jobs projected to open by 2030, now is the time to invest in the next generation of talent. Your donation can support student transportation, scholarships, and the launch of 10 Huddles nationwide in 2026.

If you’re able, please give to the Green Sports Alliance Foundation's "Playing for the Next Generation" campaign today to help inspire the next generation of leaders in sports and sustainability: https://charity.pledgeit.org/gsaf

🌱🏟️ October 6: Green Sports Day is almost here — and this year, we’re raising the bar.

Over the years, Green Sports Day has transformed from a moment of awareness into a movement of real change across sports, communities, and the planet. Here’s what makes this day so powerful — and why you should be part of it:

🔍 What is Green Sports Day?
Launched in 2016 (as declared by President Barack Obama), Green Sports Day is a global initiative from the Green Sports Alliance. It spotlights how sports can help address climate change & promote sustainable, healthy communities.

It’s built around three pillars: Inspire Action, Demonstrate Leadership, and Impact Community. These give shape to how teams, venues, and fans can participate meaningfully.

📈 What we’ve already accomplished
In 2023, there were 168 official participants from across 14 countries, activating in three major areas: digital media, community events, and public commitments to climate action.

Venues, teams, fans, and organizations lit up in green, hosted events, and shared sustainability stories that elevated awareness far beyond just one day.

🚀 Why this year matters
Green Sports Day isn’t just about visibility: it’s about turning goodwill into impact. Whether that’s reducing waste, committing to cleaner energy, or engaging local communities—every action counts.

Fans expect this. A significant portion of the sports audience wants their teams, venues, leagues to walk the talk on sustainability.

💡 How YOU can get involved

Share your sustainability wins — even small ones — using

Organize or participate in a local event: a community cleanup, shoe drive, tree planting, or “green game” at your venue.

If you represent a venue/team/organization, demonstrate leadership: light up your facility in green, reduce single-use plastics, or publicize your sustainability commitment.

Use available resources: toolkits, guidelines, case studies from the Green Sports Alliance. https://www.greensportsalliance.org/greensportsday

Let’s make October 6th count. Because when sports lead, people notice. When people act, communities change. And when communities change, the planet wins. 🌍

Together, let’s make Green Sports Day 2025 the most bold, most impactful yet. Who’s in?
