ecomaine is a non-profit waste management company owned and operated by 20 municipalities in Southern Maine. With an additional 50+ contracted communities, ecomaine provides services to a combined population of 450,000. We are dedicated supporters of recycling and environmental protection, as evidenced by our ISO-14001 certification for excellence in environmental management at each of our three f

acilities. Our three waste management facilities—a waste-to-energy plant, a landfill/ashfill site and a recycling operation—are located just west of the Maine Turnpike at Exit 46.

Meet the City of Sanford, this year's eco-Excellence Award winner for Municipality of the Year!

From textile diversion to multi-family recycling to community-wide outreach, Sanford has built a sustainability program that touches nearly every corner of the city. In its first year alone, their Apparel Impact partnership collected nearly 134 tons of textiles, and their work with ecomaine's Multi-Family Recycling Initiative expanded from 61 units to 173 in just a few months - diverting nearly 1,800 pounds of recyclables in it's first few weeks.

Meet Portland Housing Authority, this year's eco-Excellence Award winner for the Multi-Family Housing Leader category!

PHA has spent years building a sustainability program designed around one thing: their residents. Before rolling out anything new, they survey residents to understand their specific challenges, then reach them through newsletters, mobile push notifications, and property-specific signage. On the infrastructure side, rooftop solar panels across ten multi-family buildings will save nearly 1.8 million pounds of CO2 emissions over the next decade.

Meet Claire Carter, president of the Freeport High School Earth Club and the first-ever recipient of ecomaine's Student Leader Award.

It started with plastic silverware in the cafeteria. Claire noticed it freshman year, led the Earth Club through researching alternatives, and presented to school leadership. Once the switch to metal utensils was in place, she made sure it lasted. Then she took it further, collaborating with peers on written testimony in support of LD 1543, the Act to Establish the Green Schools Network.

Meet Kelly Greenlee, Community Outreach Librarian at Prince Memorial Library and this year's eco-Excellence Award winner for the Individual category!

Kelly has turned PML into something not often seen: a library where you can drop off recycling, swap clothes, borrow a power drill, and get your zipper fixed, all before returning your books. Through Repair Fairs, clothing swaps, a Library of Things, and regular visits from ecomaine educators, she's built programming that meets people wherever they are on their sustainability journey.

Meet Reverie Coffee House in Brunswick, this year's eco-Excellence Award winner for the Business category! Owner Hannah Josselyn built a shop where sustainability shows up before you ever order: composting programs, a reusable mug wall, and a to-go cup program designed to ditch single-use plastic for good.

Reverie’s commitment to make every choice sustainable invites all their customers to be part of the small daily changes that add up to big impact. It's our honor to recognize Reverie Coffee House as part of this year's eco-Excellence Awards.

Meet Thomaston Grammar School's 5th Grade Class, this year's eco-Excellence Award winner for the Non-Profit, Community Group, or School category!

After reading about plastic pollution, these fifth graders rolled up their sleeves: collecting data across nine classrooms, repurposing single-use materials, hosting a school-wide showcase, and a televised school board presentation still on the horizon.

ecomaine had so much fun at Portland Sea Dogs Education Day, and we got to do it twice this season!

⚾♻️ Our team was out at Hadlock Field connecting with students, talking recycling, and maybe sneaking in a little baseball too. Getting to bring sustainability education to kids in a place they already love is one of our favorite parts of our partnership with the Sea Dogs. Big thanks to the Portland Sea Dogs for having us, as always.

Years in the making. Now officially underway.

On May 21st, we broke ground on our new state-of-the-art recycling facility at 90 Blueberry Road in Portland, and we couldn't be more excited about what it means for Maine. Built for today's materials and tomorrow's demands, the new facility will feature the latest sorting technology and a modern, purpose-built space for our team. More capacity, cleaner outputs, and a bigger impact for every community we serve.

This milestone has been years in the making, and it would not have been possible without the incredible partners, board members, and team members who helped get us here. The future of recycling in Maine starts here. 🎉♻️
