Years in the making. Now officially underway.

On May 21st, we broke ground on our new state-of-the-art recycling facility at 90 Blueberry Road in Portland, and we couldn't be more excited about what it means for Maine. Built for today's materials and tomorrow's demands, the new facility will feature the latest sorting technology and a modern, purpose-built space for our team. More capacity, cleaner outputs, and a bigger impact for every community we serve.

This milestone has been years in the making, and it would not have been possible without the incredible partners, board members, and team members who helped get us here. The future of recycling in Maine starts here. 🎉♻️

We see a lot of things end up in the trash, but experiences with the people you love? Never. This Mother’s Day, give Mom something we’ll never get our hands on. Because the best gifts don’t come in a box, and they definitely don’t end up in a landfill. 💚

Happy Mother’s Day from ecomaine!

From taxes to toxins, waste costs you, our community, and our planet every day. And we're here to talk about it.

Tonight, we're joining FreeportCAN, the Freeport Sustainability Advisory Board, and fellow community partners for Waste Wise Freeport: a FREE forum and Green Resource Fair where real solutions are on the table.

📍 Freeport Community Library, 10 Library Drive
🗓️ Tonight, May 6 | 6–7:30 PM

Speakers: Natural Resources Council of Maine, AgriCycle Energy, GoGo Refill, Freeport Community Services Thrift Shop, Freeport Community Library, the Town of Freeport Sustainability Advisory Board, and us!

Come learn:
• What bin does this go in? How to recycle the right way
• Why waste matters far beyond your trash can, and why recycling alone isn't the answer
• How waste disposal costs hit your tax bill, and what Freeport is doing about it
• Simple changes that save you money now

Waste isn't inevitable. It's a design flaw we can fix together. See you tonight, Freeport!

🎨 Submissions are OPEN, and we want to see your Maine!

Recycling is a Work of Art is back for 2026, and we're looking for Maine artists to leave their mark on one of our iconic Silver Bullets. If you've never seen one in person, they're big. We're talking 61 feet of total canvas, and every inch is yours to work with.

Whether you paint, illustrate, design digitally, or are just picking up a brush for the first time, this competition is for you. All you need is a connection to Maine and a vision worth sharing.

Winning designs will be selected by ecomaine's Outreach & Recycling Committee. Each winner receives a $1,000 stipend to bring their design to life at full scale. Your finished Silver Bullet will then travel across ecomaine's 70+ member communities as a piece of living, functional public art, out in the world, seen every day, by real people.

Swipe through to see a few of the previous years' artists in action and some of the finished containers out in the wild.

📅 Submissions close May 19th. Don't sit on this one.

Even our boilers need a spring break.🏭🔧

Twice a year, we take our one of our boilers offline for a scheduled maintenance outage, and it's a bigger deal than it might sound.

Our Waste-to-Energy plant runs around the clock, incinerating unrecyclable waste at over 2,000°F and converting steam into about 100,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually. That’s enough electricity to power our own waste-to-energy and recycling facilities, ecomaine’s electric vehicles, plus about 15,000 homes for a year! With that kind of nonstop work our equipment needs dedicated time for thorough inspections, repairs, and upgrades to keep everything running safely and efficiently.

Swipe through to see a peek behind the curtain of what goes into a boiler outage, and why this scheduled downtime is essential to keeping Maine's waste out of landfills and in the energy grid. ♻️⚡

📍 North Haven, Maine. What a visit.

Last week, our team made the trip out to North Haven and we left feeling genuinely inspired by what this small island community is building. North Haven Community School is one of the recipients of an ecomaine School Waste Diversion Grant, and their work is already in full swing.

The school's student-led NHCS Green Team is doing something really special. Students wear their Green Team lanyards and walk the halls auditing classroom waste bins, rating contamination levels and helping their peers understand what belongs where. We got to give a presentation on recycling to a group of students and meet the young team members doing this work firsthand. Watching kids take real ownership over sustainability in their school is exactly what this grant program is about.

And the grant work is just one piece of the picture. Beyond the recycling program, the school has a working garden and composting system, a greenhouse, and a workshop space bringing together woodworking, boatbuilding, and a 3D printing and robotics lab - to name a few. For a small island school, the scope of what they're doing is remarkable.

North Haven has received the first half of their grant, with more to come as the program builds toward a community Green Fair. To every student, teacher, and community member at NHCS making this happen, thank you for having us. 💚

Curious what the rest of our grant recipients are up to? Head to the blog to see how schools across Maine are rolling up their sleeves and getting sustainable. Read more here: https://hubs.li/Q049vQ2j0🔗
