Have you heard about Advance Care Planning (ACP)?
It’s a process that helps you to prepare in advance for your future medical needs, if and when you aren’t able to fully communicate what you want or need. Preparing for these situations beforehand through the ACP process provides you with some control over how you will be treated and cared for. It is an invaluable gift to your loved ones and the medical team, who will be able to advocate for you based on your wishes.

Dr. Eriko Onishi graduated from the Tsukuba School of Medicine in Japan and has been practicing medicine at the OHSU Department of Family Medicine since 2011. She is very passionate about improving Advance Care Planning (ACP) practice and has provided multiple ACP workshops nationally and internationally in the last decade. Read more on her website erikoonishi.com.

Another week of delicious meals here at ! Chicken katsu curry, meat jun, miso cod and delicious desserts 🍰 😋

Did you know there are multiple theories about where chicken katsu curry originated? One theory is that a Yomiuri Giants baseball player, a regular at Ginza Swiss restaurant, complained it was too hard to eat curry and katsu separately, so the restaurant combined them. The rest is history ⚾️

Which dish would you come in for?

Today commemorates the 84th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 that authorized the forced removal and incarceration of over 125,000 people of Japanese ancestry, most of them U.S. citizens.

Our community members have been folding frogs before lunch which will be strung up during a rally this Sunday (2/22) hosted by and .

Please see the information on from Oregon Tsuru for Solidarity on this rally:

As Japanese Americans, we know too well the immigrant detention system that separates families and wrecks our communities. Right now, as ICE terrorizes our immigrant neighbors, it is more important than ever that we speak up and speak out.

Community members will gather at Elizabeth Caruthers Park at 2:00pm for a rally featuring a performance by , a candlelight ceremony, and community leaders, and then we will have a procession to the ICE facility, where we will hold a vigil.

In addition to speakers, the program will include a remembrance ceremony with survivors and descendants of WWII incarceration. As a show of solidarity, participants will string tsuru, or paper cranes, along the perimeter at the ICE facility.

All are welcome as we stand together in solidarity. RSVP (optional) and learn more by visiting bit.ly/Feb22DOR

The Lunar New Year is upon us! Help celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse with this one of a kind collaboration with Adrienne Hohensee and Jenny Tseng! Saturday- February 21st at 6pm at Ikoi no Kai. Limited seating so make your reservation today!

“Lunar New Year is one of the biggest holidays for East and Southeast Asian communities and marks the start of the new year according to the lunisolar calendar. Celebrating this holiday in the diaspora can look different from the ways our parents, grandparents, and extended family celebrated back in our regions of origin.

This dinner is a display of the tension between honoring and respecting traditions and adapting and evolving them to the places we find ourselves in. As part of the Taiwanese and Chinese diasporas, hosts Jenny and Adrienne are excited to cook a multi-course dinner featuring foods grown by farmers in our community and dishes from our families.”

Join us for this delicious meal!
Tickets can be found in the link in the bio.

Last month Ikoi no Kai served up delicious and lucky Osechi to celebrate the new year! Osechi, a traditional Japanese new years dish, is made up of many small dishes that give the diner good fortune for the new year. Our chefs and volunteers spent all week planning and preparing each dish, and as always, we were blown away by the delicious feast they put together! Big thanks to for their continued support of this special meal!

It’s happening (again)! Ikoi no Kai is hosting Homecooked this Saturday 2/7!

Please join us for the making of the 2nd volume of homecooked: a collaborative and intergenerational zine cookbook this Saturday! A little over two years ago, 46 community members came together to create 96 handmade zine pages including 40+ recipes preserving ancestral stories of tenacity and endurance.

Our theme for this round is community celebratory meals, potluck, and communal gathering. We will then combine the pages into our second volume of homecooked, our collaborative cookbook zine! Feeling like you just want to sketch some food? Or just want to contribute a family recipe? That’s okay, too! All are welcome with any creative variations of preserving food memories in a zine. This is an intergenerational drop in style event and we encourage people of all ages to attend.

WE will supply the art materials, snacks, and beverages, free of cost :) We will have guidance available for creative ideas from artist friends and assistance for seniors from student friends. If you are one of these friends and would like to assist at the event, please let us know in this form!

YOU bring a friend, grandparent, or the whole family, your inner child, a food memory to share, and if available: a photo (copier/ printer available), recipe, inspiration (cookbook, art, etc.).

❤️A’misa, Jeannine, and Jack
