Students often develop their own explanations for why they were identified for gifted services, especially when no one explains the process to them.

They may think:
❓ "My teacher picked me."
❓ "I must be smarter than everyone else."
❓ "I don't know why I'm here."

Clear, developmentally appropriate conversations can help students build a more accurate understanding of gifted identification and their own learning strengths.

By addressing misconceptions directly, educators can foster trust, reduce unhealthy comparisons, and help students see gifted services for what they are: support designed to meet their learning needs.

“Disrespectful” is one explanation. Here’s another: a gifted child or twice-exceptional learner who notices a gap, questions the answer, or needs the explanation to make sense before moving on.

For many 2e kids, giftedness, ADHD, autism, anxiety, or learning differences can show up as constant correcting, debating, or asking “why.” But correction does not always mean defiance. Sometimes it is curiosity. Sometimes it is frustration. Sometimes it is a real attempt to understand a concept that does not feel clear yet.

Before we label a gifted learner as rude, difficult, or disrespectful, we have to ask: What are they trying to understand?

We love seeing incredible things happening in our Gifted Community!

Dear Florida Association for the Gifted,
Thank you so much for the grant that supported our mission simulation at the Challenger Learning Center in Tallahassee. We just completed the field trip, and it was a fantastic experience for our students. They were engaged from start to finish and loved working through the challenges together.

Thank you again for supporting meaningful learning experiences for gifted students.

While the world watched Artemis II reignite excitement about space exploration, one group of Jacksonville students got to experience that same sense of discovery up close. Thanks to support from JPEF and the Florida Association for the Gifted, 4th and 5th-grade students stepped into the roles of scientists and engineers at the Challenger Learning Center, solving problems, working as a team, and seeing STEM come to life in real time. Missions like Artemis II remind us what is possible. Experiences like this help students believe they can be part of it. 🚀✨ Read about their experience here:
