Join Lisa Cain from Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control as she discusses Presenting a Case to the Prosecutor at the Shelter Leaders Unite Annual Conference. In this session, you'll learn that a thorough investigation and a well-organized case file can make a meaningful difference. FWACC reports that 89% of its cases are accepted by the prosecutor, and 99% of the accepted cases result in convictions for animal-crime charges.
In this session, we’ll walk through how FWACC conducts investigations and turns findings into clear, useful reports and case files. We’ll look at the information Animal Control Officers gather, how it is documented and organized, and how FWACC has streamlined its process to support prosecutors as they evaluate cases.
We’ll also trace how the approach has developed over time, including the practical changes that have helped strengthen case preparation. Participants will gain insight into the role a well-structured case folder can play in presenting evidence for prosecutorial review.
The goal is not to offer a one-size-fits-all formula. Instead, we’ll share a process that other agencies can assess and adapt to their own resources, procedures, and jurisdictional needs. By examining what works at FWACC, attendees can identify ways to make their investigations and case files more effective—and help ensure that animal-cruelty cases are presented with clarity and care.
