Union Project Union Project is a community ceramics center presenting classes and events in a fun and welcoming environment.

We offer more than 100 clay programs throughout the year to provide education to people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Union Project is your community arts center - strengthening the stability of Pittsburgh's neighborhoods and residents. The historic building, located at the intersection of Stanton and Negley Avenues, provides an affordable, safe, and welcoming home to community builders, creative entrepreneurs, artists, nonprofits, and small businesses. Together with the support of community members, Union Project has made space for tens of thousands of diverse people to connect, create, and celebrate. Starting February 3, 2017, we are open on:
Tuesdays 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Wednesdays 9:00 am - 9:00 pm
Thursdays 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Monday & Friday open for events and programs as needed. Saturdays, and Sunday Open for public events and programs only.

There is still space left in our Clay Pumpkin Patch workshop! All ages welcome! Come pick your own ceramic pumpkin and then carve it into a jack-o’-lantern: https://unionproject.org/event/clay-pumpkin-patch/

Hollow clay pumpkin forms are individually handmade by one of our teaching artists for you to come and carve – just like a real pumpkin! They will be in the “leather-hard” state, meaning that they are firm to the touch, yet soft enough to be carved with a knife. After being carved, the pumpkin will be dried and fired in our kiln to almost 2000 degrees. When you pick it up two weeks later, it will be a permanent jack-o’-lantern, safe for inside and outside use.

Wondering what kind of custom program you can do with us? Here are just a few options. Contact [email protected] to set something up!

- One-time workshops — Engaging, hands-on projects that can be completed in a single class or visit.

- Multi-week programs — Sessions ranging from 3 to 12 weeks, allowing students to develop their skills and explore more in-depth ceramic processes and history.

- Field trips — Bring your class to our studio for an immersive, hands-on experience with clay.

- On-site programming — Our teaching artists can bring ceramic programming directly to your school, including schools and classrooms without access to a clay studio.

- Raku experiences — We have a mobile Raku Kiln that can travel to do Raku firing. Raku is a firing method in which pieces are pulled out from an extremely hot kiln and placed in sawdust or newspaper to develop a mesmerizing metallic and earthy-toned artwork.

- Immersive ceramic experiences — We can work with schools to develop customized programs that provide students with a deeper understanding of running a non-profit community studio.

Take a break from making ceramics at the Union Project and join City Theatre for their production of In Clay! It’s 1938, and the sounds of jazz underscore your walk through a musical about a brilliant woman whose husband gets credit for her work (What? Never.) But it's not really about that... It’s about a long-lost childhood friend who brings out the passion in you. It’s about the love of the art.

ALSO, decorating the walls of this world will be ceramic pots handcrafted by local artists from Union Project, which you'll be able to buy after the musical's run!

Handmade Arcade, Dec 4-6, is the region's largest holiday market featuring handmade gifts. UP brings the Wheel Mobile to do demonstrations and a curated selection of ceramics to sell.

The Winter Pottery Pop-Up will be held one week later on Saturday, December 12. This event will take place in our Great Hall and Atrium. There will be hot beverages and a Pittsburgh Cookie Table you could contribute to!

We would love to partner with your school or classroom to bring the experience of working with clay directly to your students. Our programming can take place on-site at your school, or you can bring your students to our newly renovated ceramic studios for a field-trip-style experience.

We are happy to collaborate with teachers to develop projects that connect to classroom curriculum, complement existing arts programming, or simply allow students to explore, create, and learn through clay.
