Today is National Donut Day and what better way to celebrate than by drooling over the recipe for Šišky? Do you or someone in your family make šišky?

Sisky are Slovak donuts. Making homemade donuts is easy. Just make the dough, cut out circles, and fry them in oil.

What is the day after Easter and why is it significant?
Slovak Easter Monday (Veľkonočný pondelok) in Christianity is one of the days of the Easter octave, when Christians experience the Easter joy of their redemption. It is associated with various traditions and customs that are considered to be rites of passage between the end of winter and the beginning of spring. This non-Christian practice has been theologized and included in the Christian framework in various cultures throughout history.
Activities include the unique oblievačka (water splashing-pictured below) and šibačka (whipping with decorated willow branches) traditions. Boys visit girls to splash them with water and tap them with willow branches to ensure health, beauty, and youth for the year ahead, often receiving painted eggs, ribbons, or sweets in return.

A trailer for the upcoming documentary about Ján Havlík (1928 - 1965), the new Slovak martyr. He died for his faith and loyalty to the Church. Even the cruelties of the prison, where he spent 11 years of his young life, could not break his love for God and for people. You can find more information on the website:
