When you spend your career looking for what could go wrong, it can be hard to notice what’s going right.
For first responders, that mindset can follow you home expecting the worst, questioning everyone’s intentions, or feeling like nothing will ever change.
Changing that mindset starts with small, intentional steps:
• Notice your words. “Nothing ever goes right” leaves little room to see what did.
• Challenge the assumption. Ask, “What do I actually know, and what am I expecting?”
• Watch what you feed your mind. Make room away from outrage, complaints, and work talk.
• Look for one good moment. A laugh with your crew. A peaceful drive. Time with your kids.
• Talk honestly with someone you trust. You don’t have to work through everything alone.
You can acknowledge the hard parts and still make room for something good.
