Flinn Scholars enjoyed an exclusive gathering with historian Walter Isaacson, the 2026 ASU Centennial Lecturer and author of “The Greatest Sentence Ever Written,” who with ASU President Michael Crow examined the opening line of the Declaration of Independence:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among those are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The annual ASU Centennial Lecture was established in 1985 with a Flinn Foundation endowed gift to commemorate the university’s 100th anniversary. The Oct. 7 public event at ASU Gammage was sponsored by Barrett, The Honors College.

At the Flinn Foundation, helping bioscience startups is in our DNA. 🧬

Since 2014, the Flinn Foundation Bioscience Entrepreneurship Program has backed 66 Arizona bio startups across 12 cohorts with more than $2.1 million in funding. In 2027, six startups will receive $75,000 each through a nonprofit partner.

The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts hosts the season-opening concert of the Scottsdale Symphonic Orchestra. The performance features violinist Sicong Chen performing Edgar Meyer’s Violin Concerto, which combines classical technique with American folk and jazz influences.

Shaun Kirkpatrick’s college years coincided with a transformative moment in world history: the fall of communism in the Eastern Bloc. As a member of the second class of Flinn Scholars (1987), Shaun had the opportunity to explore, study abroad, and follow his passions at a time when those experiences were opening his eyes to a rapidly changing world.
