Heather Mead, a researcher at TGen North in Flagstaff, is developing a way to more accurately diagnose Valley fever. The project received one of seven $100K Translational Seed Grants this year from the Flinn Foundation.

The fungus lives in the soil in the southwestern United States. Arizona has some of the highest rates in the country.

Since 2013, the Foundation has committed more than $10M in seed grants to 90+ research teams advancing translational research and the goals of Arizona’s Bioscience Roadmap.

The state's growing bioscience ecosystem will be showcased June 22-25 at the BIO International Convention in San Diego. So will Wexford Science and Technology’s Tom Osha, host of The Commons, who will be broadcasting from the Convention floor.

Jonathon Parker, M.D., Ph.D., a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist at Mayo Clinic Arizona, is developing software to better treat epilepsy and reduce seizures. The project received a $100,000 Translational Seed Grants this year from the Flinn Foundation.

The biomarker-driven programming could improve treatment for the 25,000 epilepsy patients in Arizona and 1 million across the United States.

Since 2013, the Foundation has committed more than $10 million in seed grants to 90 research teams that are advancing translational research and the goals of Arizona’s Bioscience Roadmap.

Did you know TGen North detected the first COVID-19 patients in Arizona? Or that bioscience-related job growth in Flagstaff has exceeded that of Phoenix or Tucson? The Flinn Foundation celebrated all things bio in Northern Arizona this week, touring TGen North and Northern Arizona University's Pathogen and Microbiome Institute. Arizona's Bioscience Roadmap Steering Committee also met online and showcased three local startups. And the day wrapped with a networking event at the Museum of Northern Arizona.
