What a joy celebrating 15 years of the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership!

To mark the occasion, we released a children’s book, “Arizona’s Everyday Heroes,” featuring the personal stories of 15 of our incredible Flinn-Brown Fellows from across the state. The book, along with the art exhibit at the Flinn Foundation, celebrates civic leadership in all its forms, from public service and education to business, health care, the arts and community advocacy.

“Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.”

2020 Flinn-Brown Fellow Brent Burgett often returns to this line from former NFL linebacker Mike Singletary. As assistant chief with Mesa Fire and Medical Department, he sees the chance to serve people in their hardest moments as a gift.

With 22 years of experience in the fire service, he’s seen how public policy shapes nearly every aspect of his work, from integrating modern fire codes into local law to addressing healthcare gaps that can make 911 the default safety net. And when complex challenges arise, Brent finds value in being able to turn to his fellow Fellows for trusted advice.

Today was Human Services day at Academy!

Fellows started the morning with longtime Arizona health and human services leader the Honorable Susan Gerard, who shared valuable lessons from her public service career. Next, Department of Economic Security Director Michael Wisehart walked Fellows through Arizona's safety net programs and how the department works alongside other state and federal agencies to deliver services.

From there, Fellows heard from a panel of experts on accessible and affordable child care and took a closer look at the Arizona Department of Child Safety with agency Director and Flinn-Brown Fellow Kathryn Ptak, J.D. Fellows also dug into a panel discussion on affordable housing and homelessness and sat down with Jessica Berg, Chief Program Officer of St. Vincent de Paul to learn how the nonprofit helps meet families' immediate needs.

Finally, Fellows wrapped up the day with plenty of food for thought from panelists on addressing food insecurity in Arizona.

Academy Day 5 was just what the doctor ordered! 🩺

To kick off health care day, Debbie Johnston, Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, shared key findings from the statewide health assessment and AHCCCS director, Roberta Harrison covered the ins and outs of the Medicaid system.

Fellows then sat down with James Stover, CEO and Plan President, Arizona Complete Health, who shared his perspectives on leadership and health plan policy.

The conversation continued with members of the Arizona for Better Healthcare coalition, who discussed their advocacy efforts to protect Medicaid funding and address critical health care issues. Finally, Fellows explored Arizona’s public health systems with Fellow and Chief Medical Officer of the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, Nick Staab, M.D.

In honor of Arizona Civics Week, we’re celebrating the students in West Point High School’s Civic Action Club! 🌟

Through our Leadership, Civics and You program, these students are exploring the kind of leaders they want to be and how they can make a positive impact in their communities.

For their first session, students were joined by the Honorable Anna Tovar, who shared lessons from her experience as a public servant and inspired students to think about their own paths to leadership.

Shout out to civic educator and club advisor, Gabriella Flores Cabrera for creating a space where students can deepen their civic knowledge, develop their leadership skills, and take action in their communities. This is what Arizona Civics Week is all about! 👏

Fellows hit the books for another Academy day on education—and this time all eyes were on Arizona's higher education system. Fellows started off taking a closer look at public university funding with John Arnold, Senior Vice President, COO & CFO for University of Arizona. They also spoke with a panel of community college leaders about the role community colleges play in workforce development. Regent Doug Goodyear, Chair, Arizona Board of Regents shared his civic leadership journey and provided greater insight into ABOR's governing role. Finally, Fellows had the opportunity to speak with college students about their personal experience navigating the higher education system.

Academy is back in session for week 2! Today was all about Arizona's Pre-K-12 Education system. In the morning, Fellows pulled up a seat to hear from their fellow Flinn-Brown Fellow, Rebecca McKay, Director of Data and Technology at ASU Helios Decision Center for Educational Excellence, about student demographic and performance data. They also learned the ABC's of school funding with Laveen Elementary School District CFO Charlie Martin. Next up, they talked with a panel of state legislators about various educational bills passed during the 2026 legislative session. The Honorable Tom Horne gave Fellows a look into his role as Superintendent of Public Instruction and we closed out the day with robust panel discussions on Universal School Choice and public and charter school governance.
