π₯ We're seeing an uptick in requests for rescue help with dogs in crisis. Not surprising given that Miranda's Rescue has been found out. We don't do a lot of rescue, but we still want to remind people of a few things:
1) We believe adopters deserve lovely dogs that make life HAPPY. When we have room, we set our sights on the most family-friendly and dog-tolerant dogs in need - usually Blocky headed dogs. No shortage, right? My gawd, they're in every shelter. We don't mind naughty dogs! Rough & rowdy dogs and even dog-grumpy dogs. We train'em up, match'em with ready homes and support them as they find their groove together.
We DON'T accept dogs with behavior extremes, overt aggression towards people especially. And we do euthanize if a dog crops up with unworkable behaviors after they've joined us. It's rare, but it comes up occasionally. Before the haters go cray: Damaged temperaments are a 'dog thing' not a 'breed thing.' Many committed families with imperfect dogs love and manage them beautifully, and they get our full respect for showing us all how it's done. We just can't in good faith ask our adopters to take on a bigger burden.
2) If you're hoping to surrender (or transfer) a dog-in-need to us who shows behavior extremes, FYI - we'll have to decline them, BUT we'll do our best to help you find resources to help you make responsible decisions that work for all of you. And we'll hop on the phone if you need to talk it out.
Let's continue to work together to match the people who've chosen to adopt with dogs that bring them a life of joy.
