The United Nations Ocean Conference took place this week in France. Ratification of the High Seas Treaty was a primary focus of the summit. 

What is the Treaty’s goal? 
~ Protect international waters by establishing marine protected areas. 
~ The target for the “30X30” pledge is to conserve 30% of land and sea by 2030. (Currently, less than 3% of the ocean is protected from harmful activities.)

How is it going?
~ As of yesterday, the High Seas Treaty has not yet been ratified by the required number of Member States, but significant progress has been made towards the 60 needed for the Treaty to enter into force.

Scientists have identified 866 new species as part of the Ocean Census, a global mission to protect and accelerate the discovery of marine life.

“The ocean covers 71 percent of our planet, yet it is said that only around 10 percent of marine life has been discovered so far,” says Michelle Taylor, principal investigator for Ocean Census.
