As the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup brings unprecedented attention to soccer, it's worth asking: What can coaches, parents, and athletes learn from this moment?

Join PCA CEO Jason Sacks along with Nashville Soccer Club Head Coach and former U.S. Men's National Team Head Coach B.J. Callaghan for a conversation about the evolving landscape of soccer in America and the lessons that can help young athletes thrive both on and off the field.

The game may be growing, but the values that matter most remain the same: positive relationships, personal growth, and a love of the game.

This past weekend, PCA partnered with Gatorade and ESPN's Take Back Sports campaign at the Miami Youth Sports & Wellness Festival.

Hosted by the Miami Beach Youth Sports Foundation, the event brought together families, local programs, and community leaders around a shared goal: expanding access to youth sports and creating positive experiences for every child. PCA delivered coach and parent workshops, helped spread the Take Back Sports message, and connected with families as kids explored a variety of sports and local opportunities to play.

From athlete hydration stations to obstacle courses, music, and community engagement, it was a weekend full of energy, learning, and impact.

At the Playmakers Summit in Oregon, female athletes filled an entire poster with answers to one question:

“What do the best coaches do to bring out the best in their athletes?”

The responses were thoughtful, honest, and powerful. Athletes shared how much it matters to feel believed in, included, supported, and cared for by their coaches and teammates.

From creating safe spaces to building team connections, these responses are a reminder that positive coaching leaves a lasting impact far beyond the game.

One simple rule can make a big difference.

In this clip, a coach and dad shares how he and his son use a baseball hat to signal whether they're talking as coach and athlete or as father and son after games.

Creating clear boundaries helps young athletes feel valued for more than their performance and strengthens the relationships that matter most.

Athletes thrive when they feel safe being themselves.

The courage to show up authentically, embrace who you are, and bring your full self to a team creates stronger connections, greater confidence, and a deeper sense of belonging.

When coaches and leaders foster environments where every athlete feels valued and respected, they help young people grow not only as athletes, but as people.

A positive youth sports experience can shape a young person for life.

When coaches lead with encouragement, respect, and a focus on development, athletes gain more than sport skills; they build confidence, resilience, and leadership that carries into every area of life.

For more than 25 years, PCA has helped coaches, schools, and youth sports organizations create positive experiences for young people nationwide.

What did NBA All-Star De'Aaron Fox learn from playing youth sports?

The list is long but at the top is: How to work with others.

Playing sports can provide an amazing opportunity for young people to learn how to collaborate, communicate, and work together with those around them. The lessons learned about teamwork are ones that reach far beyond the game.

Seeing an athlete thrive in practice but struggle during games can be frustrating for both athletes and parents.

When this happens, it's easy to assume they need more technical instruction. Often though, they just need help and support navigating pressure and building confidence.

Check out this Ask PCA post for a few ways parents can help.

What happens when a community comes together to make youth sports more accessible?

For the fourth year, OUSD's Expanded Learning YES Sports Program has provided free opportunities for elementary students across Oakland to discover new sports, build confidence, and experience the joy of play. Through partnerships with local youth sports organizations, hundreds of families have been able to participate in activities ranging from soccer and volleyball to skateboarding, rowing, tennis, and more.

PCA was excited to join two end-of-season celebrations, including a colorful community run and a water safety event with Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development.

These moments remind us that when communities work together, we can create more opportunities for every child to play, connect, and thrive.
