If su***de prevention is about building a world where life feels livable every day, where do we actually start?
We start with belonging.

We’re thrilled to announce that Ashley Gallegos, Director of the Places of Belonging Program at UC Berkeley’s Othering & Belonging Institute, will be a keynote speaker at Crisis Support Services of Alameda County’s free 988 Conference!

Ashley’s work focuses on what it takes to design communities where people don’t just exist, but feel truly seen, connected, and valued. If we want to prevent crises before they happen, building real places of belonging is where the path begins.

The conference is 100% free and open to everyone.

If we’re only talking about su***de prevention when someone is already in crisis, we’re missing the bigger picture.

That’s why Crisis Support Services of Alameda County is hosting a free 988 Conference, to talk about what it actually takes to build a community where life feels manageable and connected every single day.

We’d love for you to join us. Whether you’re a local resident, a community advocate, mental health practitioner, or just someone who cares about your neighbors and community, there’s a place for you in this conversation.

The conference is 100% free to attend.
Send this to a friend, sign up together, and let’s talk about where we go from here.

Join Adrienne Shilton (she/her), Senior Vice President of Public Policy & Strategy at California Alliance of Child and Family Services, and Eve Valdez (she/her), Foster Youth Advocate and Director of Business Development at RefocusOnU, for:

Using Policy and Advocacy to Create More Livable Communities

Together, they’ll explore what systemic change looks like when we start by listening to the people most impacted.

This session will consider how policy, services, and cross-sector partnerships can come together to create more supportive environments for youth. Where livability is woven into the places where young people live, learn, work, and connect.

We’re excited to invite you to the upcoming CSS Virtual 988 Conference on 9/18/2026 from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm.

Moving beyond su***de prevention, our focus this year is on livability and helping people stay connected to life. Inspired by work done by Canada’s First Nation organizations, we support people in finding hope, belonging, meaning, and purpose.

Join crisis workers, mental health advocates, clinicians, and community leaders as we dive deep into the future of 988, healing centered crisis intervention, and compassionate care.

The keynote session will explore how belonging can shape the way people experience institutions, services, and one another. Other workshops will include a discussion on using culture and community as a framework for crisis response in native spaces and using policy and advocacy to create more livable communities.
