Founded in 1960, The Sierra Club Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity governed by an independent board of directors. The Foundation promotes efforts to educate and empower people to protect and improve the natural and human environment. Our goals are to:
• Solve the climate crisis primarily through a successful transition to a resource-efficient clean energy economy that better serves people and nature;
• Secure protections for public lands and waters, promote healthy ecosystems and communities, and fight for clean air and water;
• Expand opportunities for more people to explore, enjoy, and protect the planet by supporting programs and policies that reach across economic, cultural, and community lines to get people outdoors; and

New cars could soon be less fuel efficient and drivers could pay the price.

Sierra Club, along with a coalition of environmental and consumer protection groups, is suing the Trump administration over its rollback of federal fuel economy standards.

The weakened standards would mean:

â›˝ 121+ billion more gallons of fuel consumed through 2050
đź’¸ $1,600+ more in fuel costs over the lifetime of affected vehicles
đźš— New vehicles in 2031 could be less efficient than vehicles from 2024

The standards being rolled back were projected to save drivers 64 billion gallons of gas and deliver $35 billion in savings to consumers over the lifetimes of the vehicles covered.

Drivers shouldn’t have to pay more at the pump because automakers are being allowed to make less-efficient cars.

Happy Week Without Driving! 🚶‍♀️🚲🚌

This week is a reminder that about one-third of Americans don’t drive, and our communities should work for everyone, not just people behind the wheel.

Everyone deserves transportation that’s accessible, affordable, convenient, and clean. But too much of the U.S. is still built around cars, while millions of gas-powered vehicles pollute the air we all breathe.

Week Without Driving is a wake-up call for elected officials: experience what it’s actually like to get around without a car.

And imagine if we built communities where getting around without driving wasn’t stressful or inconvenient, but easy, affordable, less polluting, and maybe even fun.

That’s the future we should be building.

BREAKING: Today, a federal judge issued an emergency injunction BLOCKING border barrier and road construction across the Big Bend region. The Trump Administration had lifted a temporary pause on construction in Big Bend National Park earlier this week.

This victory is the result of months of organizing and bipartisan support for an end to the destruction. Thousands of people in Texas and across the nation told our leaders to put a stop to bulldozing in Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, and surrounding lands.

We are grateful to the Center for Biological Diversity, Friends of the Ruidosa Church, and a Big Bend-area river guide and landowner who led the lawsuit that resulted in this victory. Sierra Club, our Lone Star Chapter, and National Parks Conservation Association backed them in court, represented by Earthjustice. And many other partners, community members, and allies have also joined the fight.

These forests belong to all of us. Let's make sure the people deciding their future hear from all of us.

280,000 people across the country have submitted comments to defend the forests, watersheds, wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities, and wild places protected by the Roadless Rule.

In Idyllwild, California, 70 people packed a community town hall to hear from business owners, outdoor recreationists, educators, conservation leaders, and wildfire and water experts about how roadless forests are connected to nearly every part of their community--from clean water and wildlife to recreation, the local tourism economy, wildfire resilience, and the wild places they hope future generations will inherit.

People experience these forests in different ways—as hikers, mountain bikers, hunters, anglers, educators, firefighters, business owners, students, parents, and neighbors. But protecting the public lands we share gives us common ground.

Now it's our turn to speak up.

The federal government is considering rescinding the Roadless Rule, which has protected some of our nation's wildest national forest lands for more than two decades. THE PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD CLOSES OCTOBER 6.

Congress is considering a bill that would give fossil fuel companies sweeping legal immunity for their role in driving the climate crisis and the disasters it fuels.

These companies knew the risks decades ago. Now, communities are paying the price through wildfires, floods, extreme heat, and rising disaster costs — while Big Oil keeps raking in billions.

In September, Sierra Club advocates and partners from across the country joined the National Wilderness Coalition’s () annual National Wilderness Week in Washington, DC to urge members of Congress to defend American landscapes under threat. Wilderness areas are places that protect and sustain clean air, clean water, wildlife habitat, Indigenous cultural and spiritual connections, and access to quiet recreation.

But earlier this year, the Department of Interior announced a review of the policies that ensure nearly 200 million acres of these wild lands are safeguarded for future generations. People across the country spoke up for the places they love.

BREAKING: Last night, the pause on destructive border construction in Big Bend expired — and bulldozers could return.

In August, bulldozers began clearing new roads through Big Bend National Park, threatening wildlife habitat, wilderness-quality landscapes, cultural resources, and the region’s famous dark skies. Public pressure helped stop the destruction. Now Big Bend needs us again.

On Friday, our allies will be back in court seeking an emergency freeze on construction and we’ll be there in support. Tens of thousands of people have already spoken up — and we’re not stopping now.

Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park, and the surrounding borderlands should not be carved up by new walls, roads, barriers, bright lights, and other destructive infrastructure.

Tell your elected officials: No destruction in Big Bend. Protect this extraordinary place for wildlife, local communities, and generations to come.
