This article and Congresswoman Lee still speaks for me. Bitter lessons from Super Tuesday.
The two ruling class parties are conspiring to leave voters with only two choices: an outright, fascist would-be dictator on one side, and a shameful apologist for war, Wall Street, and the status quo on the other side. But voters have showed that they can push back. In Michigan and Minnesota respectively, they voted “uncommitted” by 13% and 19% respectively. Our work will be made much more difficult by the loss of Congress woman Barbara Lee voice.
Voters are learning to organize independently and use their ballot as a strategic and tactical weapon – not just to reject war and genocide, but also to defend the basic needs of the people. When they connect voting to ongoing organizing around racial and economic justice, they transform non-voters and occasional voters into a social and political force that can change the narrative.
The burning question today is how to defeat Trump and the fascist Project 2025 movement. Non-voting is not an option. Fascists are making serious, detailed proposals to ban books, ban abortions nationwide, drill-baby-drill for fossil fuel, strip people of their citizenship, expel Palestinians from Palestine, and round up literally millions of migrants, unhoused people, and anyone who protests. Wall Street and those who work on their behalf think that they have won by denying the voice and representation of Congresswoman Lee, they are wrong. They have given us more resolve to fight for the economic and political democracy we need especially at this time. Thank you for your service and leadership.
U.S. Representative and CA Senate candidate Barbara Lee was a distant fourth in the race to fill the seat left vacant by CA Senator Dianne Feinstein who passed away last year.
