Children Now

Children Now We deliver uplifting and lasting change for California’s kids by connecting people and policy.

Our kids deserve a future where they can reach their full potential with no limitations. One with accessible health and child care, high-quality education, strong mental health services, and equity across all institutions. But too often, efforts to achieve these goals are too disconnected to demand policymakers’ attention, and kids are not prioritized when critical decisions are made. Led by our e

xperienced policy and government relations teams spanning health, education, early childhood, child welfare, and a range of other areas, we learn from kids and families where they need support and lift up solutions to policymakers with the power to act. Then by coordinating collective action campaigns that unify the many voices in support of kids into one powerful message, we get policy change enacted and implemented effectively – and improve the lives of California’s kids.

We are one step closer to parents knowing the ingredients used to make the diapers their kids wear every day. 🫶👇

Right now diaper manufacturers are not required to disclose what chemicals their diapers contain. Our co-sponsored AB 1901 (Berman) will help protect kids from harmful chemicals in diapers by requiring manufacturers to list all intentionally-added ingredients - and today, it passed out of the Legislature in a bipartisan fashion and is on its way to the Governor’s desk! Let’s get this bill signed and across the finish line! 🙌

Thank you to our co-sponsors Environmental Working Group, Consumer Reports, and the Center for Environmental Health, and to the 333 Children's Movement member organizations that collectively demanded California's leaders pass AB 1901. Protect Head Start by calling on the federal administration to end its plan to strip away Head Start's quality standards TODAY!👇

Head Start is one of the country's most effective programs for young children facing poverty, supporting over 70,000 California kids today. Yet right now, the federal administration has proposed stripping away most of the standards that keep Head Start programs effective, safe, comprehensive, and accountable to the families they serve. It would mean cutting classroom safety and staffing ratios, stripping protections for children with disabilities and dual language learners, and requiring English-only instruction. It would also hit rural communities especially hard, where Head Start is often the only affordable and available child care option.

These proposed changes won't take effect, though, until a final rule is made. Public comments to the Department of Health & Human Services are allowed from now through October 6. Join us in voicing support for Head Start and demanding its standards are kept in tact here 👉 https://bit.ly/4gV42GD

Nearly half a million kids have lost Medi-Cal coverage since January 2025, with another large drop likely just around the corner as the federal administration's Medicaid cuts are further implemented. We recently spoke to Capital & Main about the kids across California being affected and what families can do to keep their children covered - we invite you to read here 👉 https://bit.ly/4gNnrJx

California kids are still largely eligible for Medi-Cal coverage, despite past and future changes. See what you need to do to keep your children enrolled in Medi-Cal here 👉 https://bit.ly/4wL3FnQ

Medi-Cal enrollment among children has fallen by more than 460,000 since 2025. Medicaid cuts taking effect next year will push coverage even lower.

As the legislative session wraps up, we’re helping kids fight against and prevent cavities. 🙌👇

Fluoride varnish helps prevent cavities. Our co-sponsored bill, AB 350 (Bonta), will allow more kids to get fluoride varnish at school and other settings by letting those working for or under contract with a Medi-Cal doctor or dentist to apply fluoride varnish and get reimbursed. Over the next two weeks, we’re fighting to get this critical bill to the Governor’s desk. 💪

As the legislature wraps up session, we’re fighting to create better pathways to become a teacher. 🙌👇

Our sponsored bill AB 1904 by Assemblymember Gipson will help create teacher apprenticeship programs that provide mentorship and compensation, building a stronger, more diverse teacher pipeline to better meet the needs of California's students. 💪

As the legislative session wraps up, we’re fighting to get more foster families access to child care. 🙌👇

Access to child care allows more children entering foster care to live with family members, experience fewer placement disruptions, and remain in school and work if an expectant or parenting foster youth has a child of their own. Our co-sponsored bill, SB 1051 (Menjivar), would expand the role of child care navigators to help connect families to child care more efficiently, ensuring foster families can access child care more quickly and reliably. Over the next two weeks, we’re fighting to get this critical bill to the Governor’s desk. 💪

As the legislative session wraps up, we’re fighting to deliver disaster aid to foster youth. 🙌👇

When natural disasters strike, children and youth in foster care don't always get the support they need to recover. Our co-sponsored bill, AB 1602 (Rubio), would establish a statewide Child Welfare Disaster Response Fund to ensure youth currently or formerly in foster care and their caregivers have timely access to critical resources when disasters strike. Over the next two weeks, we’re fighting to get this critical bill to the Governor’s desk. 💪
