Y’all!!! I’m going to be a featured author at the Greater Central Valley Book Festival! 🎉

I’m excited to share space with fellow authors, readers, and people who believe in the power of stories to inspire, challenge, and transform lives.

I’ll be bringing both of my books,
for Strong Black Women who desire SOFFNESS when perfection ain’t enough

and

Still His: Hope and Healing for Those Who Were Hurt in the Church.

Different books. Different journeys. But both rooted in something I care deeply about: healing, liberation, and the freedom to define ourselves for ourselves.

If you’re in the Tracy, CA area, come see me! I’d love to connect, share some hugs, and talk about all the things!

Have you ever gotten so good at being who people expected you to be that you forgot how good it feels to just be YOU?

The smart one. The responsible one. The professional one. The strong one.

And somewhere along the way, you learned which parts of yourself to show and which ones to tuck away.

But what happens when you stop making everybody else’s comfort the deciding factor in how you show up?

Maybe you laugh a little louder. Share an opinion you would’ve kept to yourself. Let your silly side come out right alongside your serious side.

And maybe, just maybe, you discover that you actually LIKE the person you’ve been keeping under wraps.

You don’t have to become somebody new to enjoy being more fully yourself.

Your employer doesn’t HAVE to care about the biases you experience.

And here’s the uncomfortable part: they may never choose to do anything about them.

You can be excellent at your job, exceed expectations, and STILL be treated differently from somebody else doing the exact same things.

You can speak up. You can leave. You can stay because you need that paycheck.

And the organization can keep right on succeeding.

Your overpreparing might look like excellence.

Your silence might look like professionalism.

Your constant effort to avoid being labeled difficult might look like being a team player.

And your employer may be benefiting from every bit of it.

So here’s my question:

What is it costing YOU to be successful in an environment where you have to work this hard just to be treated fairly?

Because being good at surviving a workplace doesn’t mean that workplace is good for you.

Sometimes the hardest things to change about ourselves are the things we have perfectly good reasons for doing.

Maybe you learned to be guarded because trusting people came at a cost. Maybe irritation became your first response because you spent years feeling unheard. Maybe being defensive helped you protect yourself.

And maybe those responses made sense at the time.

But here’s a question worth answering:

Is this still protecting me, or is it becoming something I no longer want to carry?

You can honor what you’ve been through without giving every survival behavior a permanent place in your life.

Research is more than typing a question into a search engine and reading what comes up.
It’s a process of asking questions, gathering information, examining evidence, and sometimes discovering that the question you started with isn’t quite the question you need to be asking.

It takes curiosity, rigor, and a willingness to have your assumptions challenged.

That’s part of what I love about being a researcher. You don’t always know what you’ll discover when you begin.

Sometimes the most valuable discovery is something you didn’t even know to look for.

Sometimes getting free from other people’s definitions of you can turn into looking for a new person to tell you who you are.

A coach.
A therapist.
A pastor.
A mentor.
A teacher.
Somebody you trust.

Those voices can matter. They can teach, challenge, support, and help you see things you couldn’t see on your own.

But their voice still doesn’t have to become the authority over your life.

Reclaiming your Internal Authority doesn’t mean nobody else gets a voice.

It means yours has one too.

We spend a lot of time trying to fix self-doubt after it shows up.

Build your confidence.
Believe in yourself.
Stop questioning yourself.
Know your worth.

But sometimes we skip an important part of the story:

How did I learn to doubt myself in the first place?

That question takes us beyond “what’s wrong with me?” and gives us room to examine what we’ve been taught about ourselves—and whether we still believe it.

Sometimes the thing you’re becoming has been leaving clues for YEARS.

An old idea.
A question you keep returning to.
Something you wrote years ago that sounds strangely familiar today.

Growth doesn’t always mean leaving your old self behind.

Sometimes you look backward and realize there was a thread there all along—you just didn’t have a name for what you were building yet.

Some of us learned that loving people meant carrying things that were never actually ours to carry.

Their feelings.
Their choices.
Their disappointment.
Their outcomes.

And after doing that long enough, putting something down can feel a whole lot like not caring.

But maybe there’s another way to look at that….

Putting down what belongs to them doesn’t mean I care about them less. It means I have more room to care for what belongs to me, too.

Sometimes we inherit rules about faith without realizing REALIZING their rules.

We learn what church is supposed to look like, what Christians are supposed to do, and what “faithful” is supposed to look like.

And after doing something one way for long enough, “this is how we do it” can start feeling a whole lot like “this is how God said to do it.”

But (lemme hold your hand) those aren’t necessarily the same thing.

It might be worth examining what we learned …
