June is Immigrant Heritage Month, and we’re celebrating immigrants around the world for their vibrancy and resilience. Despite facing immense adversity, immigrants continue to be an integral part of the social, cultural, and economic fabric of our communities.

In Alameda County, immigrants make up approximately 34% of the total population — making the county one of the most diverse regions in the Bay Area.

As we celebrate immigrants this month and every day, we honor the countless contributions they make to our communities, culture, and future!

¡Junio ​​es el Mes de la Herencia Inmigrante! Celebramos a los inmigrantes por su determinación y resiliencia. A pesar de enfrentar una inmensa adversidad, los inmigrantes continúan siendo una parte integral del tejido social, cultural y económico de nuestras comunidades.

El martes, el Ayuntamiento de Union City escuchó un informe del administrador municipal sobre una ordenanza impulsada por el concejal Lance Nishihira que habría prohibido al ICE realizar redadas u operar en propiedades de titularidad municipal. Sorprendentemente, la mayoría del Ayuntamiento —el alcalde Gary Singh, el teniente de alcalde Jaime Patiño y el concejal Jeff Wang— se negó incluso a considerar la ordenanza.

Se ha difundido información errónea sobre lo que ocurrió en esa sesión del Ayuntamiento. Esto es lo que realmente ocurrió. El vicealcalde Patiño afirmó que la ordenanza crearía «una falsa sensación de seguridad» entre los inmigrantes. En su lugar, propuso una moción para reafirmar y añadir dos palabras al apoyo del ayuntamiento a una resolución de 2017, carente de fuerza, que declaraba a Union City una «ciudad compasiva». Esta moción se aprobó por 3 votos a 2, con el alcalde Singh y el concejal Wang también a favor. Ellos también afirmaron que la ordenanza habría creado una «falsa sensación de seguridad».

Creemos que los residentes de Union City comprenden la diferencia entre una declaración débil y no vinculante y una ley. Creemos que cualquier medida que nuestra ciudad pueda adoptar para proteger a nuestros vecinos inmigrantes merece la pena.

Nuestros valores religiosos nos dicen que todos somos hermanos, que todos somos hijos de Dios y que nadie es un extraño. Como dijo Guru Nanak, fundador de la fe sij: «Nadie es un extranjero». Hacemos un llamamiento a la mayoría del ayuntamiento para que vuelva a presentar la ordenanza, la someta a votación y apruebe la ordenanza de zona libre de ICE. On Tuesday, the Union City City Council heard a report from the city manager about an ordinance championed by Councilmember Lance Nishihira that would have banned ICE from staging or operating on city-owned properties. Remarkably, the city council majority - Mayor Gary Singh, Vice Mayor Jaime Patiño, and Councilmember Jeff Wang—refused to even consider the ordinance.

There's been misinformation posted about what happened at that city council meeting. Here's what actually took place. Vice Mayor Patiño said that the ordinance would create "a false sense of security" among immigrants. He instead proposed a motion to reaffirm and add two words to the council's support for a toothless 2017 resolution declaring Union City a "compassionate city".This passed on a 3-2 vote, with Mayor Singh and Councilmember Wang also in favor. They too said the ordinance would have created a "false sense of security."

To be clear, a resolution is not a law but simply a statement of values. Once passed, an ordinance becomes law and carries legal weight. Unlike the council majority, we believe immigrants are smart enough to make their own decisions about safety and security. We believe that Union City residents understand the difference between a weak non-binding statement and a law. We believe that any step that our city can take to protect our immigrant neighbors is worth taking.

Our faith values tell us that we are all siblings, that we are all children of God, and that no one is an outsider. As Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh faith, put it: "No one is a foreigner". We call on the city council majority to present the ordinance again, bring it to a vote, and pass the ICE-free zone ordinance. Our immigrant community members deserve nothing less.
