Liberated Kids - Self-Directed Education in Oakland Liberated Kids (Nin@s Liberad@s) is a self-directed education collective for kids' ages 5~14. Why? Humans, especially kids, learn all the time, naturally!

It is time for an ALTERNATE to school, especially for THOSE that have suffered the most at the hands of the school system... brown and black kids. They learn how to walk and how to speak complex languages without being taught and going to "school". Kids are curious, playful, and social. That's how they NEVER stop learning. Schools often dull these natural drives of learning... as kids are only allowed to be playful and social during certain pre-determined times during the day. Curiosity is occassionaly encouraged but only when it fits the goals of the curricula.

¿Por qué? Ahora es el momento de un ALTERNATIVO a la escuela, especialmente para AQUELLOS que más han sufrido a manos del sistema escolar ... niños morenos y negros. Los seres humanos, especialmente los niños, aprenden todo el tiempo, ¡naturalmente! Aprenden a caminar y a hablar idiomas complejos sin que se les enseñe y sin ir a la "escuela". Los niños son curiosos, juguetones y sociables. Así es como NUNCA dejan de aprender. Las escuelas a menudo matan estos impulsos naturales de aprendizaje ... ya que a los niños solo se les permite jugar y socializar durante ciertos momentos predeterminados durante el día. En ocasiones, se fomenta la curiosidad, pero solo cuando se ajusta a los objetivos del plan de estudios.

Our young people are ready to dance, perform, sing, and bring all the joy—but how long the party lasts is up to all of us!

🎻 Strings for Homeschoolers is coming to Liberated Kids!

We’re partnering with Harmony Project Oakland to offer a Monday afternoon strings program for homeschoolers ages 7–12 in Oakland and surrounding areas.

Come meet the educators, try out the class and learn more at our orientation + trial lesson on Monday, September 28. Official classes begin October 5!

🗓 Mondays
⏰ 2:00–3:45pm
💛 Suggested contribution: $5–$25 per class
🎻 Students will need their own instrument—educator-approved rentals are available through Starland Music in Alameda.

Our hope is to build a community of 10–20 young musicians who can learn, practice and make music together. No student will be turned away for financial reasons.

This is Sully. ❤️

Sully recently moved to Oakland and brought all his creativity, leadership, curiosity and zest for life with him. He makes friends easily. He creates. He plays. He tests the limits of his body and takes risks. And he confidently makes decisions about what he wants to do, who he wants to be with, what he wants to learn, and how he wants to learn it.

The thing is—most kindergartners start out this way.

Curious. Joyful. Intrinsically motivated. Full of ideas. Trusting themselves.

And then, year after year, we tell kids what to learn, when to sit, when to stand, where to go, who to be with. Slowly, that curiosity and trust in themselves can start to fade.

At Liberated Kids, we’re trying to protect and nurture what is already there. To create a space where curiosity can keep growing, the joy of learning doesn’t have to disappear, and autonomy and community can flourish together.

Sully’s momma told us:

“I’m glad we moved out here. It feels right. It feels really special to be part of this community.”

We think it’s pretty special too. ❤️

This is Joni. ❤️

Joni has been part of Liberated Kids for more than three years. She’s an incredible Pow Wow dancer, crafter, singer, actress—and a young person who knows deeply who she is while discovering who she wants to become.

In many ways, Liberated Youth was created for Joni: a decolonized space where she can engage in self-directed learning without being separated from her culture, community, interests, or herself.

Her dad, Manny, once told us:

“Liberated Kids is the closest thing I’ve seen to Indigenous ways of education.”

We’re building something rooted in relationship, autonomy, identity, belonging and village.
