Palmetto Project

Palmetto Project www.PalmettoProject.org Our job is to study these ideas, learn what makes them work, and adapt them to the needs of our communities.

It is our view that somewhere in the world, some community is using an innovative approach to solve the very same problems we face in South Carolina. At the Palmetto Project, we believe that South Carolinians have within themselves the imagination and determination to realize the full potential of our state.

Today, we honor the life and memory of our long‑time friend and Families Helping Families volunteer, Mary Willis Hellams.

Mary poured her heart into our FHF program for 25 years. Her dedication touched every family she served and every volunteer who had the joy of working alongside her. Her laughter and her love for the Midlands community made Families Helping Families stronger.

This year will not be the same without her. But her legacy of generosity will continue to shine through the work we do and the families we serve.

We are grateful for her life, her service, and the example she leaves with us.

Did you know one of the earliest and largest Memorial Day ceremonies documented by historians took place in South Carolina?

On May 1, 1865, newly freed African Americans in Charleston gathered to honor fallen Union soldiers by singing hymns, placing flowers on their graves, and paying tribute to their lives.

As we observe Memorial Day today, we honor and remember the lives of our military personnel who served and sacrificed all for freedom.

This we are thrilled to feature the “shiny happy people” from Palmetto Project who serve as “lunch buddies” once a month at our partner school!

Last month, our team helped serve lunch and treat our kiddos like royalty during “Kings and Queens Day” at the school.
Special shout out to the lunch leaders from CCSD, Tabitha, Felicia, Aletha, and Soila who keep bellies full and the cafeteria in order!

During May 4-8, 2026, CCSD is hosting Teacher Appreciation week and has invited us to partner with them on saying *thank you* to the teams that fuel our local children’s future. If you’d like to help us deliver 110 gift cards for gas during Teacher Appreciation Week, check out the link in our bio!
(Please note: donations for gift cards are mot tax-deductible)

In this cozy week between Xmas and New Year’s Eve, time feels a little slower and a little softer, but there is still celebrating left to do! Today, we are wishing Anna, Henrietta, and Kristina the happiest of December birthdays.

They each bring heart, thoughtfulness, and dedication to our work across our programs and communities to help families thrive, make healthcare accessible, and strengthen South Carolina every day. We are incredibly grateful for the care and collaboration on our programs like Insure SC, FHF of the Lowcountry, and Begin With Books.

Join us in spreading a little extra seasonal cheer for these three and celebrating their trips around the sun in 2025! 🎂
