We had a wonderful time at the SFLR: Sustainable Forestry and African American Land Retention Network Landowners' Conference in Birmingham, Alabama!

Congratulations to this year's award recipients—including our landowners, foresters, and community leaders—whose commitment to land stewardship, education, advocacy, and service strengthens families and communities.

We're especially proud to celebrate two members of the CHP family:

🏆 Asija was named SFLR Forester of the Year
🏆 Ms. Yvonne Knight Carter was recognized as CHP Landowner of the Year

Thank you to SFLR for creating a space where landowners and partners can come together to learn, collaborate, and strengthen family landownership across the region.

What does heirs' property have to do with housing stability, disaster recovery, and affordable housing?

More than many people realize.

When families lack a clear title to inherited property, it can create barriers to home repairs, disaster assistance, financing, and long-term housing security. These challenges don't just affect individual families—they impact entire communities.

Join the Center for Heirs' Property® on Tuesday, June 23, for the second session of our CHP Policy Webinar Series:

From Practice to Policy: Resilient & Affordable Housing for Heirs' Property Families
Date & Time: Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 1:00 PM ET
Register Now: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_GMAuQciHTNyUcC4RvQUR3A

Our panelists will explore how heirs' property affects housing stability, property values, affordable housing preservation, and recovery after natural disasters—and discuss policy solutions that can help families repair, retain, and pass down their homes for generations to come.

Please share this with someone who might need it.

Our latest blog shares why this work matters, how communities grow stronger when families can keep their land, and ways you can help someone take the next step forward.

South Carolina's new Heirs' Property Tax Relief Act removes a significant barrier for families seeking to clear title to inherited property. The law helps ensure that qualifying family transfers made to resolve heirs' property issues do not trigger property tax reassessments, making it easier for families to protect and retain land that has been passed down through generations.

This legislation was made possible through collaboration among the Center for Heirs' Property®, the Lowcountry Gullah, Habitat for Humanity South Carolina, and Together SC

For many families—especially within Gullah Geechee communities—heirs' property challenges have contributed to rising costs, legal complications, and the risk of losing ancestral land. This new law represents meaningful progress toward preserving family ownership and generational wealth.

The work continues, but today we celebrate a step forward for South Carolina families.
