The Center for Heirs’ Property® recently joined Star 99.7’s Lowcountry Forever to talk about the work we do alongside families to protect their land, strengthen ownership, and preserve their legacy.

CHP’s Director of Communications, Tom Keppeler, shared insight into heirs’ property and the challenges families can face, while Director of Development Nulani Bennett discussed ways the community can support our mission—including our upcoming 15th Annual Danielle Hope Watson Commitment to Justice Award Reception on September 17.

Earlier this month, the Center for Heirs’ Property® joined leaders from across the field at the 15th Annual NBLES Conference, held August 5–7.

CHP’s Chief Advancement and Engagement Officer, Brett Wadford, joined a panel alongside Felecia Pettway, Director of Development with Legal Services of Alabama; Jordan Backstrom, Program Specialist with the National Community Stabilization Trust (NCST); and Kristopher Smith, National Heirs’ Property Practice Lead with LISC Jacksonville.

During the discussion, Brett highlighted the importance of wealth preservation and generational asset transfer, including how heirs’ property, unclear title, and a lack of estate planning can put family homes, land, and other generational assets at risk.

He also shared how CHP works with families to address these challenges through legal support, estate planning, financial education, and forestry assistance—helping families protect the roof over their heads and the land beneath their feet.

Because preserving family assets is about more than ownership; it is about protecting opportunity for future generations, strengthening housing stability, and helping communities build lasting economic resilience.

We’re grateful for opportunities like Black and Latino Economic Summit to share what we’ve learned, strengthen connections, and advance conversations around protecting family land and generational wealth.

How does public investment help families protect their homes, preserve their land, and strengthen their communities?

Join the Center for Heirs’ Property® on September 1 for From Practice to Policy: Public Investment, Heirs’ Property and Stronger Local Economies, a virtual panel discussion examining how policy and public resources can create meaningful impact for families and communities.

We’re bringing together Sarah Bolling Mancini, Karama Neal, Ph.D., and Senator Kim Jackson for a conversation focused on housing assistance, landowner education, disaster recovery, community resilience, and the role these investments play in building stronger local economies.

At CHP, we see firsthand how access to the right resources, information, and support can help families protect what they have worked generations to build. This conversation takes that work from practice to policy.
