For over 230 years, Landmarks for Families has cultivated thriving children and families by teaching, Our Mission: To cultivate thriving children and families.

Landmarks for Families, formerly Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC), is a 501(C)3
nonprofit supporting children and families in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. For more
than 230 years, our organization has evolved to meet our community’s needs and provides
holistic residential and family programs in safe environments that empower those we serve
to find a new, hopeful direction. Our Vision: Our vision is that all children will have loving and stable families and a nurturing
community empowering them to lead successful lives. Due to the nature of our work and our clientele, Landmarks for Families upholds strict
community guidelines for posting and commenting on all of our social media channels.

Do you know your way around a 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲—and enjoy helping young people discover their creativity?

Landmarks for Families is seeking a volunteer to teach our residents how to use a 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲. From learning the basics to completing fun projects, this is an opportunity to help young people build creativity, confidence and practical skills.

We have the 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲. We just need someone willing to share their time and talent!

This evidence-based, trauma-informed approach puts relationships at the heart of our work. Through encouragement, consistency and everyday opportunities to learn, we help individuals build practical skills, recognize their strengths and create positive, lasting change.

𝗪𝗘’𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗙𝗙!

Landmarks for Families is hiring 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳—called Family Teachers within our residential programs—for second and third shifts.

This is not a classroom teaching position. Our Family Teachers work directly with young people in residential care, creating a safe, structured, and supportive environment where they can heal, learn, and grow.

In this role, you will:

• Provide direct supervision and support
• Serve as a positive role model and mentor
• Help youth develop social, self-help, and independent-living skills
• Support daily routines, activities, schoolwork, and household responsibilities
• Use a trauma-informed approach to build trust and encourage positive growth

𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: High school diploma

Applicants must also be at least 23 years old, have a valid South Carolina driver’s license and good driving record, and successfully complete required background checks and drug screening.

For young people preparing for adulthood, a first job can build confidence, independence and a belief in what is possible.

We are especially grateful for the companies willing to employ our residents while taking a trauma-informed approach—offering clear expectations, patient guidance, constructive feedback and opportunities to learn and grow.

And our young adults are rising to the occasion! One is the youngest employee at their Shake Shack location, while another is being trained for a management role at Ross. These opportunities are helping them discover their strengths, develop leadership skills and envision possibilities for their futures.

These employers understand that developing a strong employee takes more than teaching job duties. It means recognizing potential, building trust and investing in the whole person.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? Before Louisa Ann Swain made voting history, she was a child at the Charleston Orphan House—the organization known today as Landmarks for Families.

Louisa entered the Orphan House around age 10 after losing both of her parents. Nearly six decades later, on September 6, 1870, she became the first woman to legally cast a ballot in a U.S. general election since 1807—and she did it at approximately 70 years old!

Her extraordinary journey reminds us that we can never predict how far a young person’s courage and potential will carry them.

For more than 230 years, our organization has helped young people move forward with safety, support and opportunities to build brighter futures. From the Charleston Orphan House to Landmarks for Families, history isn’t merely behind us—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻.

Through Family Reunification and Community Preservation Services—better known as 𝗙𝗥𝗖𝗣𝗦—Landmarks For Families works alongside families in their homes and communities to help them navigate challenges, strengthen relationships, and create greater stability.

Because every family’s circumstances are different, support is individualized to meet each family where they are. Our team helps caregivers build practical skills, connect with needed resources, establish healthy routines, and create safer, more nurturing environments for their children.

The goal is not simply to respond to a crisis. It is to help families develop the strengths and tools they need to remain safely together and thrive long after services end.
