Obama's Surprise Kids With Storytime at Presidential Center Opening

On the opening day of the Obama Presidential Center, Barack and Michelle Obama skipped the photo ops and headed straight for the kids.

The former president and first lady sat down inside the Chicago Public Library branch built into the new center and read "Where the Wild Things Are" to 25 schoolchildren, joined by LeVar Burton, the longtime host of "Reading Rainbow" who spent decades making reading feel like an adventure for kids across the country.

The moment turned warm and funny fast. When Obama read Maurice Sendak's line about being "king of all the wild things," Michelle jumped in with a quick correction, "Although there were no kings," drawing laughter and applause from the room full of kids who got the joke instantly.

It was a small moment inside a massive day. The Obamas had personally greeted the first 100 visitors through the doors before settling in for storytime, turning what could have been a quick ceremonial stop into a real visit with the city's youngest readers. The library branch itself isn't a side feature of the center, it's a working public library, open to the same South Side community where the Obamas built their lives long before the White House.

The opening fell on Juneteenth, following Thursday's dedication ceremony packed with former presidents, first ladies and a long list of celebrities. But for the kids sitting on the floor of that library on Friday, the biggest names in the room weren't on a stage. They were sitting right there with a book, reading to them like it was the most important thing happening in Chicago that day, because for that moment, it was.

In 1947, after years of study, political organizing, and activism abroad, Kwame Nkrumah returned to the Gold Coast, now known as Ghana.

Before becoming one of Africa's most influential independence leaders, Nkrumah spent nearly a decade in the United States and later continued his political work in Britain. During those years, he was exposed to Pan-African ideas and movements that shaped his vision for the future of Africa. He believed that African people should govern themselves and that political freedom was essential for economic and social progress.

His return to the Gold Coast marked the beginning of a new chapter. Within a few years, he emerged as the leading voice of the independence movement, mobilizing ordinary workers, farmers, students, and traders in the struggle against colonial rule. In 1957, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African colony to achieve independence in the modern era, and Nkrumah became the country's first Prime Minister before later serving as its first President.
