What happens when teenagers trade screens for sails?

Take a look at how our Sea Scouts are learning more than just how to sail, they’re building leadership, teamwork and bravery with life changing opportunities that only Scouting America can provide.

We are excited to officially introduce our new Scout Executive, Joseph Andreo! Please join us in welcoming Joe to the Coastal Carolina Council family. Below is a special message from Joe.

I am very excited to be coming on board to lead the Coastal Carolina Council and to make our council the “Crown Jewel” of Southern Scouting! I believe that with Dr. Bobby Baker, Chuck Lance, and myself as the Key 3, we can improve the finances, increase recruitment, and restore camp HO NON WAH to provide an incredible program experience that our youth will remember for the rest of their lives!

My career started after graduating from St. John’s University in Business Management. I worked as a middle office manager, broker, relationship manager, and project manager. In 2014 I decided to make the transition to the nonprofit world of the Boy Scouts of America, now Scouting America. I began as a Development Director at the Connecticut Yankee Council in Milford, CT, was promoted to Sr. Development Director, Director of Development/CFO, Director of Support Services, and Assistant Scout Executive/COO during my tenure there. In 2024 I was selected as the Scout Executive for the Housatonic Council in Derby, CT. During my time in Scouting, I have been fortunate enough to have been able to significantly raise revenue, increase recruitment, and make many Capital Improvements at the 5 camps I ran. Additionally, I was incredibly lucky to have worked with two great boards and many dedicated volunteers that made it possible to have the success I had. I’m anticipating working with many more dedicated volunteers and another great board that will help drive the improvements I am sure we will make.

On a personal note, I am an Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, have served on numerous Wood Badge staffs, was staff adviser to the Order of the Arrow, and taught at Camp School. In 2017, I served on staff at the National Jamboree as a commissioner. I enjoy golf, skiing, traveling, and spending time with my family.

I’m looking forward to meeting and working with all the staff, board, and volunteers of the Coastal Carolina Council. Together, we will serve any child who wants to be a Scout and do great things for the best youth program in the world!

Have you taken the NEW Safeguarding Youth Training yet?
Make sure you've taken it before Sunday, May 31, 2026, as that is when Youth Protection Training EXPIRES!
Youth Protection Training (YPT) has been replaced by the new Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT). This training is required for all Scouting America registered volunteers and is a joining requirement.
Here are some updates regarding the new training:
➡️ The new 20-minute Safeguarding Youth (SYT) Refresher course is Live.
➡️ If you have not taken the NEW SYT full 90 Minute course, you must take that first before you can take the refresher to get full SYT credit.
➡️ If your SYT is expired for 7 days or more, you must take the full 90 minute course again.
➡️ If you fail the course quiz on the refresher course with less than an 80% on your first attempt, you will be directed back to the full 90 minute course.
➡️ The course is available in the Volunteer Learn Center in English and Spanish.

As Summerville, South Carolina continues to grow, local families and community leaders are calling for greater investment in recreational spaces for teenagers, especially safe, accessible places where young people can stay active, connected, and engaged.

One voice helping lead that conversation is 13-year-old Scout Colton Staley of Troop 788 in the Coastal Carolina Council, BSA. Through his experiences in Scouting and community service, Colton has seen firsthand how positive activities and strong community spaces can shape young people’s lives.

After moving to Summerville three years ago, Colton noticed a lack of free public spaces for teens, including basketball courts, skating areas, and other recreational facilities. He believes the shortage of opportunities contributes to boredom and, in some cases, negative behavior among youth.

Colton and his family are advocating for more community-centered spaces that encourage leadership, activity, and connection. They point to places like Goose Creek’s Central Creek Park as a model for what Summerville could create: well-lit, family-friendly spaces designed for all age groups.

One of the four aims of Scouting is Citizenship Training. Thank you to the leaders who encouraged Colton to become an informed, active, and service-minded member of his community.
