At home in Guinea-Conakry, Mohamad was fighting for workplace justice and lower living costs. When the government heard him speaking out, they kidnapped and tortured him, but miraculously, he survived. He knew he needed to leave the country, for his own safety and that of his family. Thankfully, AJWS grantee Y’en a Marre had just opened KARIBU, a safe house for activists seeking refuge and solidarity in Senegal. We're proud to support activists like Mohamad, who fight for human rights and justice around the world, and the grantee organizations that make it possible.

This week, several AJWS partners in Mexico gathered to commemorate native corn through public events in downtown Oaxaca city, including a forum and a ceremony. The events celebrated traditional farming and corn as the heart of community life while emphasizing the importance of food sovereignty and local agricultural systems. AJWS is proud to support this work.

AJWS President and CEO Tawanda Mutasah spoke yesterday as part of an UNGA event about strengthening public service delivery and governance through data, civic technology, and citizen engagement. He shared:
"For states to gain and maintain citizen trust, there is no substitute for accountable service delivery and the honoring of people-centered constitutional commitments. Not silencing critics. Not propaganda. Not posturing in international society. Those are the lessons from the work of AJWS and its partners across the world."

In Guatemala, AJWS grantee National Platform of Organizations of Victims of the Internal Armed Conflict, or La Plataforma, is a coalition of survivors’ organizations devoted to carrying forward the torch of justice. Their march to honor the victims of the country’s 36-year civil war included representation from nearly all of Guatemala’s 24 Indigenous groups—thanks to AJWS funding. The impact of this transportation grant was profound: it offered the most marginalized people a feeling of dignity, and the assurance that their presence could be felt before the halls of power.
