Empowerment starts with education and passes through generations.

The visionary Zenab Mohamad Nour devoted her time to uplifting Sudanese women and girls, and like her mother, Fatima Ahmed continues the legacy, supporting the right to women's and girls’ education.

Through her mother’s dreams, Fatima Ahmed understood what it meant to pour love into others, shaping how she would be as an agent of change for her community.

This Pride Month, we’re launching a special campaign dedicated to uplifting LGBTQIA+ stories! To kick it off, we’re hosting a digital screening of Wanuri Kahiu’s powerful film "Rafiki" — originally banned in Kenya.

In a world where we continue to witness a rise in violence against LGBTQIA+ people, sharing their stories is more important than ever. Celebrate love, resilience, and the power of being seen.

Stream Rafiki anytime starting June 1st, all month long, and stand with us in amplifying LGBTQIA+ voices.

Across communities facing climate crisis, displacement, and land loss, something important is happening. Young people are stepping into leadership.
• Restoring forests.

• Preserving knowledge.

• Defending land.

But none of this happens without support.
Right now, these efforts are expanding—but resources are not keeping pace.

With care at the center, we understand mothering as a politic with the ability to transform systems and build a sustainable future for all.

To think like a mother is to think beyond ourselves. It’s about creating safe, supportive spaces even when the world feels uncertain. When we bring the wisdom of mothering to everything we do, we build the foundation for a more caring and inclusive world.

Yanar Mohammed knew how to build a legacy and pass it on to the next generation. Whether speaking at a conference or protesting in the streets, Yanar Mohammed spent her life fighting for a feminist future.

“I love the young girls who come to our shelters and grow up into fierce feminists,” she said. “They become the leaders of the movement.” In her honor, MADRE has established the Yanar Mohammed Feminist Defense Fund, supporting OWFI and women human rights defenders across the region.

Give today to support the next generation of women leaders. https://www.madre.org/yanarsfund/

With rising authoritarianism, political systems are moving away from multilateralism — reducing equitable spaces for global perspectives and influence.

For Foreign Policy in Focus, Yifat Susskind and Diana Duarte discuss how we can learn from organizers and advocates already taking action at the intersection of global policymaking and grassroots movement building to create systems based in collective care.

It comes down to three key lessons:

“Forging new bonds of the international community.”
“Translating community care into policy.”
“Targeting movement power to defend and advance those policy gains.”

Moving beyond traditional or parental roles, mothering means leading with empathy, care, and solidarity to nurture the well-being of individuals and communities. As a radical force, it calls on people to take action, understand those who are suffering or marginalized, and confront what is right and wrong.

In the face of adversity, mothering is advocating for justice, standing between communities and harm.

We recognize a few of our partners who share the same care politics of mothering, dedicating their compassion to building a better world for all:

Engracia Mendoza

Estefania Cubillo

Heleena Kakar

Muna Luqman

Otilia Lux de Coti

Pratima Gurung

What do movements need in this moment?

In the face of rising authoritarianism and donor retreat, we can reimagine processes to better support communities and collective action in meeting their needs.

At Women Deliver, we discussed leaning into feminist principles to implement alternative, autonomous resource strategies to sustain one another and to transition beyond traditional philanthropy. Together, we highlighted the opportunities for clarity about how movements sustain on their own terms, rather than adapt in response to scarcity.

Our ability to imagine new futures, and new pathways, is the bridge that brings us into more sustainable systems.

The same spaces purposed to confront threats like war, authoritarianism, and ecological disaster are falling apart as multilateral systems begin to crumble. But this isn’t a moment to despair. There are opportunities we can look toward in this moment, especially when we begin to lean on and trust the activists and advocates already working to create new approaches.

“This kind of sustained transformation—towards a multilateral system that protects and cares for everyone—will not happen because powerful elites simply change their minds. It will happen when the momentum for change becomes undeniable.“
